Hi,

A while back one of the nice POTN member suggested a method for using Lightroom on multiple computers. Keep everything on one (main) computer and working files on the laptop. When working files are complete, use export to catalog and then import the catalog on the main computer.

I just tried that method and found that when I export to catalog I see that exported images are final edited results instead of originals with edits still available for modifications. Is there a way to export and import catalogs while keeping all the settings? Am I missing something?

Thanks.

From what you posted, it looks like you created a new catalog and that should have worked. The exported catalog will group your selected images or folders (whatever you choose) and move the original RAW images, your edits and the previews into the new catalog. You should find your edits are just as they were prior to the export and you should still be able to edit your images.

If you want to keep your current edits as they are but you also want to start a new project on the same photos, then you may want to create a new collection instead. While in the Library module, select the images you want to use in the new editing project and create a new collection. In the Create Collection dialogue box check “Include selected photos” and “Make new virtual copies”. You now have a complete set of copies to work with and you will retain the original edits you made to your images.

It is strange, when I exported to a new catalog, I got all my images (including virtual copies) but the new catalog shows only the final results. I can make further modifications, but cannot modify/undo and of the existing edits.

I use external HD's for this as its easy to go between computers. instead or messing with catalogs and exporting, I make sure to write the xmp data to the files, then just have LR on the laptop move the files to the external and it noes where all the files are with edits in tact
