Ok, maybe this topic has already being discussed but I just want to share this amazin thing. A friend of mine just upgraded my Rebel to a 10D. I heard there is a hack program for that but being technology challenged I never took it seriously.
Anyway, I got 17 new parameters on my camera menu. The most important ones (for me) are Flash exposure compensation and mirrow lock-up features.

So finally I can use flash on my Rebel and get nice photos. before that with all my love to that camera it was awful. I am still exploring new features but frankly I don't see a single difference between 10D and my camera now.

I guess here is my questions for 10D owners, what feature was MOST important to you when you decided to choose 10d over a Rebel.

Ditto

But to be honest I am glad I bought the 10D in the long run.

AI servo works properly.

Guys, you surprised me. The main reason - "non-plastic feel"? I really could care less if it was made from the paper as long as it works properly. I prefer to invest into nice glass since cameras come and go. :?

My interests; 10D over 300D for the following reasons:

1. 10D hit the market; DRebel didn't exist - My dilema was choosing 1D or 10D, not lower.
2. 10D Metal Alloy vs 300D plastic. to me it IS important
3. 10D 3fps (9 frame buffer) vs 300D 2.5 fps (4 frame buffer). Per my use additional fps is worth paying for
4. 10D Command Dial vs 300D tabbed navigation. just find it more efficient
5. 10D top LCD placement vs 300D rear LCD placement. again, more efficient.
6. 10D WB & Colorspace flexibility vs 300D default options.
7. 10D scroll menu vs 300D paged menu navigation. easier navigation per my preferences

*I like the 300D's flash position (as far as a built-in flash goes) and wireless remote option.

Those are mainly ergonomic differences. Even if ALL other features were the same (which there are numerous programmable differences) the expense would still be worth it to me. The items I mention may not be make or break items for everyone else; for my interests however, they're worth every penny of the price difference. They're items which the 300D hack cannot address (though I don't know about #6). Arguing about whether someone feels "Plastic vs Metal" is important is really nonsensical. Some care and some don't. I'm rough on my gear (so I care about better construction) the Drebel wouldn't have stood up to my abuse as well as the 10D.

I think the hacked 300D is an exceptional value for the price and would be tickled pink if I owned one and could enable sooooo much functionality with just a software config. But, if I really wanted all those features I would prefer to have them all built-in and in a fashion where other than fellow_hacked_body_owners would know what I'm talking about when I need assistance.

That's my .02kb

All the features Sketcher mentioned PLUS the ability to manually select AI Servo or One shot, and the ability to assign focus to the * and X buttons and leave the shutter button just for exposure. I am also partial to the magnesium alloy body. It will hold up better and not flex as much.

Scott

All that Sketcher said, plus I got a reasonable offer allowing me to have played tricks on import officers and paying ridiculously low duty.

Lisard I used to think just like you, it doesn't matter what it looks like or what it feels like, as long as it delivers good results. But like I said above I got the 10D and now I'm happy with it. Everytime I hold it, it feels great.

Ok, as soon as I get home will check out all features Sketcher posted here. This sounds more serious to me comparing to metal body. I still don't care about how it feels in my hands. I am getting a new camera in couple of weeks so it was one of reasons I let my friend to play with a Rebel (otherwise I would be scared he will break it).

I have had Rebel only for 7 months and this is my first digital camera. To be frank with you this is my first camera ever.(I prefer not to mention this to paying clients and magazines I do freelance for)

P.S. I can't wait to get my Kodak but still think that Rebel (especially hacked version) )would be a best bang for your buck if you just starting out or have very limited budget. Damn, I wish he upgrated me 6 months ago. 8)

Lisard, can't argue with you on that count. IMO, what's more important is that you're spending the money where it counts; and that's on the lenses. There will always be another camera to go for.

I bought a 10d because I thought the rebel was such a common name. And holding the metal heavy body makes me feel like a MAN!

LOL, seriously.
I bought a 10d instead of the Rebel because of my old experiences with cameras. My last camera cost me 740pounds, it was a Fuji 6900zoom. It was great I could learn all about digital cameras with it and it lasted me about 2 years.

After 2 years I was wanting to take photos that the fuji just couldn`t take because it didn`t have the right lens or there were no filters or the shutter speed just didn`t go long or fast enough for me etc.

So I looked at the Rebel, the 10d, the d70 and an old d30.
I bought a 10d because I wanted a camera that will take a photo no matter what situation I am in, and it will last me for many years.
The Rebel didn`t have as many features as the 10d and I didn`t want to use a Rebel for a year or so and then realise I needed blah blah feature.
Steve.

you should live in UK then as it's called a 300D here ;-)

I too would prefer to have a 10D but went for a rebel in the end, its more bang for buck IMO (especially considering the hack), and you could spend the savings on a 70-200 L, but the reasons listed above are very valid if you are good enough to use the extra functionality (unlike me right now)

I do live in the UK, prob 1hr drive from you Molydood.

You are right it is called a 300d here, sorry about me calling it a Rebel. I don`t know how to use all of the cameras functions yet because I`ve only had it since May but I try to learn.

Off topic, This chap was only offered about 750 for his 1d from a highstreet store he was trading it in for 1dII, I wonder what they will sell it for. And recently I went to Newyork hols had a nice chat with 300d owner in the que for Empire state build, when I was in NY I went to B&H, blimey you yanks have got things cheap. It`s where I bought my CANON 28-135 IS USM. A shade under 490dollars. Think I had 1.86 dollars to the pound.

You will find that you will cause less confusion yet if you call it a Digital Rebel. The Rebel is a film camera that has been extremely successful for a good number of years.

I call it a 300D because no one seems to know what that is outside of these message boards.

If i say digital rebel all my rich friends go "yeah, my dad bought that"

Sounds suspiciously like the opening scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Another vote for this answer! :D

By the time the Rebel came out I was already happy with my 10D. After playing with the Rebel at the store, I knew I'd still pick the 10D if I could choose. In addition to the reasons already mentioned, subjectively, the 10D feels much better in the hand. If I'm going to be taking lots of photos, I want something that feels ergonomically comfortable in my hands.

Although I am one of the people who responded in this way, I must point out that I like my 10D. I can walk into a bar with this camera and everyone in there knos that I am a Man. :D

okey doke...

The reason I have a 10D is because I chose to get a 10D. I knew that there would be other bodies coming out later, but the Rebel didn't even exist when I got the 10D and the 1DS was still a long shot.

I have never regretted the 10D...It's sturdy (mag-alloy body, etc.) and it had kelvin white balance, as well as a boatload of other features that made it an envious piece of equipment...

The Rebel will never be a 10D, just as the 10D will never be a 1Ds.

For what my 10D goes through, I definitely made the right choice...

i just purchased a 300d my first dslr, i am a noob, i think this is a great camera for people like myself who are just getting into photography as a hobby. i feel its a great starter camera with a smaller investment. who knows you might hate photography or just not use it enough.

as well as for noobs like myself your probably still learning about shutter speeds f/stop , ISO settings etc... so this camera gives you just enough controll and features without overwhelming you if i were to continue this as a hobby and want more features i will apply the hack. once i understand those setting i think i will be ready for a larger investment and by then who knows what will be out for the price of a 10D

I thought I had everything with my 10d, I thought it would last me years with it being laden richly with features. But I was wrong. For it now lies alone in a cupboard surpassed in favour of my new, the ultimate, small, camera;

***** The Nokia 6600 camera phone *****

640 x 480 pixel resolution; standard, portrait, and night modes; 2x digital zoom; self-timer
Video Recorder: Select picture size QCIF (176x144) or subQCIF (128x96); audio on/off; 2x digital zoom

One thing puzzles me, how did Nokia think you could use the self timer? I mean have you ever tried balancing a phone on a table? lol
