Ive seen a couple of pictures where people mount the flashes on regular tripods. I was wondering what the item was.

That is a hotshoe adapter. FlashZebra has them for sale on his website. If you email/pm him he can point you towards the one that has a pc connection so you can use the 580 off camera connected with the pc cord.
I'm going to order one soon.

slide on the flash feet that came with it, on the bottom, its threaded for standard tripo dmounts.

slide on the flash feet that came with it, on the bottom, its threaded for standard tripod mounts.That will work fine with the 580EX II which has a PC socket for triggering.
If your flash has no sync socket you'll need a hotshoe adapter.
