Side Hotshoe?

If we mainly use flash for portraits, and we mainly take portraits with the camera in the portrait position, then why don't camera manufacturers install a hotshoe on the side of the camera so its then on top in the portrait position?

One of those questions that popped into my head when trying to fall asleep last night. :)

The hotshoe is in the right place, but the sensor is oriented wrong. It should be vertical.

OR a cross shape, to shoot both at once...
