I am going ahead and getting this lens for my 300D.
Just curious what the folks here think about this lens. I have read some pretty decent reviews and have narrowed my decision down to this guy. Opinions?

Great quality.
Big - you can't use your built-in flash with it because of the diameter and the length.
Heavy - if you use a neck strap, you will know you have been carrying it.
If you want a 'walk around' lens, and you have a month or two to wait, consider the EF-S 17-85 IS lens. You might find it to be a good choice for less money.

I love my 24-70mm f/2.8L, quality optics.
Its heavy but I still use it for a walk around lens, no pain, no gain. I learn to live with it.
And yup build in flash will cause the shadow from your lens to fall on your picture. Works fine with 550EX mounted.

You will absolutely love it. :) I took some photos of my friend's family with my 24-70 f/2.8 yesterday, I will post them tonight if I remember :D

This is my walk-around lens. Spends the most time on my camera than any other lens. It is sharp and fast. Heavy yes but worth the effort in my opinion.
You'll love it.

Yep, I love my 24-70 as well. It's the lens that stays on my camera most of the time if I'm indoors unless I have my 70-200 2.8L IS on. And for weight, it's a feather weight compared to the 70-200 2.8L IS and 100-400 4.5/5.6L lenses. Kind of like wearing boots and then slipping on sneakers.

This is the lens that spends the the most time on my 1DMK2. Very sharp fast and wide enough to cover 80% or better of my weddings. The weight is a little blown out of proportion.

I saw that this thread was ressurected and thought I'd add that I love this lens. I bought it and have had it since September and it rarely leave my camera. I upgraded my 300D to a 20D as well since, and the combo has been beautiful.
This lens is such a joy.

I find it a BIG lens, with great optics and a unique feel.
I don't use mine much these days. I have been using the Tamron 28-75 for that purpose (mostly).

1D MK2 and a 24 -70 - Do you find that the size of your forearms also tends to obscure the flash?

HAHA. I have the same combo so I know what you mean. Despite the weight, its is a phenomenal lens. Highest quality normal zoom ive ever seen. Couldnt be happier. The image quality is leagues above the 17-85. Its very usable at 2.8 too.

I love this lens. The combination with a relatively lightweighted 300D might demand some extra attention to balancing. I myself prefer the combination with a heavier body. I love this, never have any complaints about the weight. But then again, I'm probably a bit freaky, shooting with my 300/2.8 without a monopod....

Mark Kemps setup is the same as my walkaround setup. The 24-70 is by far the best lens in the standard zoom category. Sharp, brilliant colours, contrast, build is great and AF speed is typical USM. Nothing even comes close tot he 24-70 in this zoom range.

Excellent lens, it is on my 1DSMKII 90% of the time as walk around lens.

Over all this is an awsome lens I find my copy a little at 2.8 but I shoot for newspapers and you don't notice it. Fast to focus great range for in doors. Out doors I seldom use it I uaually go ultra wide or zoom. Other than the soft 2.8 all other optics are very good.
cheers

For some reason I actually like the heavy weight.

Superb lens even though it is a bit bulky. 'Looks' right on a 1 body and balances nicely. You need the lens cap in sunny conditions as I have found it liable to flare at the wide end. Other than that no complaints.

Just bought the 20D last month and, due to the posts I've seen on this forum, made this one of the first lenses I bought. Although I haven't had a lot of time to work with it, I haven't been disappointed so far and don't think you will be if you get it.

I boought the 17-85 IS with my 20D but this is the lens that I wanted . . . and will have someday. Good for you to get good glass, you won't be able to go back, lol.

It's a great lens on my 1 Series bodies, but I passed it to a Pentax ist D user yesterday who is considering switching, and he nearly dropped it - seems he was expecting something lighter ;o)
Yes it is heavy, my only concern with the 300D would be a worry that it would cause flex in the lens mount, however I have never used a 300D, so there are probably a million others out there who will tell you it will be fine. As long as you are prepared to suffer for your art, this lens is like Maverick, "The best of the best".

While this topic is up here can someone offer some first hand advice on the canon 24-70 f2.8 v the sigma 24-70 f2.8? I've searched (not just here) and found out what I can but if someone can offer first hand advice that would be great?

The Sigma is about the same as the Tamron as far as I have heard.............which is good, but not as half as good as the Canon......... The only positive thing about the Sigma and Tamron is image quality and price, even then the Canon is better in terms of image quality.
