I finally got a chance to process a few images with my new HMC Pro1 4-point star filter... Its a pretty cool filter that I think can provide some quick and easy effects... Here are a few samples I took, the one with the cat was at 1600ISO while the one of the tree was at ISO 100...

Mainly for some indoor shots/portraits with candlights... I also plan to use it for weddings when a unity candle is present... There have been numerous other times where I found myself wishing I had one (outdoor night shots including baseball stadium panoramics, etc...) to give that "glam" effect...

Can play with it during night shoots maybe. But I agree it is a "play" filter. But fun nevertheless.

It serves a professional purpose for me as well (see my post above)... I can use it for portraits I take of my daughter and turn it into a bit of a "glam" shot (hey, she's my girl!)... I find it a cool filter that was relatively inexpensive compared to my CPL or GND filters... couldn't pass it up!

Takes me back to the days when Cokin first came on the scene - All those purple and tobacco grads and 16 point starlight filters etc.

These effects are OK in very small doses IMO :D

Yep! Definately not something you want slapped on your lens everyday... But still something IMO for my needs that I wanted to have...

^Yeah, I have one and it;'s not bad, but can be overdone, even in the shot becaus eit picks up on every little light and really adds some stars.

Like CPLs, they can be overdone, but when you used properly, I think they add a nice "WOW" factor and are pretty cool.. You are right, it can easiy be overdone so discretion must be used with this filter!

I can't imagine CPL's being overdone. They really don't do an overdone effect I think. I never use one now with digital, only couple of times. Aside from being used as a glare killer, the darkening effect I can't see as being overdone.

I've found you can oversaturate colours with one under certain circumstances
