I recall faintly that the S-series used to be encased in some metal (magnesium) material . . . I was informed that this is no longer the case and they're all plastic like the A-series.
Is this true?
Thanks!

All canon compacts used to be sturdier than they are now, but I'm pretty sure my dads SD700IS is at least partially metal.

My A75 is metal, but my brand new A570IS is plastic...

yup, I love my sd800 except it's soooo cheesey. I'd love to let my under 5 years old grandkids learn to take pix but i don't trust the cheap plastic parts especially the battery/sd card door. I'm really afraid one drop and it will be histrory. It's too bad my daughter is in the market for a new camera as she currently has a 7 year old canon but I told she may want to explore another makers camera because most Canon's P&S have crappy plastic parts.

Even if you had a camera made out of solid gold, it would still break if you left it to some toddlers. The most delicate part isn't the camera body, but the lens - if a toddler pushes or pulls it, whatever it's made out of, the small gears and motors will break and you'll be left with a multi-hundred dollar brick.
