I use my mirror lockup when doing night pictures or very tight macro shots.
You can find the option in your custom functions. I can't recall the number though.

ok, I don't have a 10D but I know it's one of the custom functions.
You usually use MLU when taking pictures from a tripod with a long lens at a slow shutter speed. When the mirror "slaps" it induces vibrations which might result in loss of sharpness. If the lens is shorter, then the vibrations are not going to have much effect on it. If the shutter speed is high, then again the mirror won't have any effect.

Custom Function #12 Mirror Lockup [enable/disable]
1. Used for the reasons cmM and ssim mentioned above.
2. Easy to forget to disable mirror lockup. Disable when done or your next shots are fubar.

Yes, set custom function 12 back to 0 when you're finished with it, otherwise your next question will be "What's happening?! I have to press the shutter twice before it takes a photo!"..... :P
