View Full Version : Upgrade old EF 28-105 to new EF 28-135 IS ?

I have an older 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 that is used as my primary lens on my 10D. I'm considering the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-4.5 Image Stabilized as an upgrade in hopes of 'sharper' pictures.

Anyone out there experienced with both? Is there an optical different between the two (other than the slightly longer focal length) or is the Image Stabilization about the only difference.

The older 28-105 is probably 10 years old or so and I'm not sure where it fit into the overall lineup back then.

There are other lenses out there in other focal ranges that I'm considering as well (i.e. 70-200mm F4L). Would I appreciate that much of a gain with the newer 28-135? Or just keep my older one and save money for longer focal length L glass?

thanks,

I'm afraid that you won't get much better optical improvement other than the IS.

Take a look at the lens review at www.photozone.de !

Both the 28-105 and the 28-135 are supposed to be decent lenses, but not great.

You might want to look at the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI selling for about 400$. It is considered to be on par optically (but not quality-wise!) with the Canon 24-70/2.8 L

Best regards,
Andy

Whilst the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM may have many charms it is not the sharpest lens in the bag by any measure. I don't think you could expect much in the way of optical improvement over your existing lens.

It certainly can't live with the EF 70-200 f/4L or indeed the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di already mentioned. Save your money for the better glass and until then keep your existing lens.

Thanks everyone - sounds like it makes most sense to stick with what I have until I can get the L glass.
