Hi - just got the new G6 this afternoon - still experimenting - will post some piccies later - but am impressed with it. So far found it quicker in focusing than the G5, faster processing and also easier to handle (at least for me it is as I have arthritis in hands/wrists). Also use Mal's 300d which I found quite comfortable.

Hi - Look forward to more details, esp low light focusing performance - ie typical indoor evening light levels. Under standard living room lighting, find that the G3 focusses terribly, if at all. Would like to know if G6 does better.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael - will let you know - haven't tried that yet but might manage to do that tonight. Must admit so far am suitably impressed - as I said earlier it seems much more responsive and quicker than my G5 and in the test photos I took earlier the colour seems much better.

Wow Coatsie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I called Canon and they said G6 would not be released until after Labor Day to retail. How did you get it so fast? I am just a breath away from placing an order....this will be my first digital camera, but the best I could do was look at a G5 yesterday. Will be eagerly waiting for your review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there - some of the UK internet sites were saying 'in stock' but when we phoned them they had 'just sold out'! Phoned our local camera shop who are one of Canon's flagships shops and they said they were expecting them in any day - anyway to cut a long story short - they rang back about an hour later and two had arrived in (although they had ordered 40!) so we jumped in the car and I am now sitting here with my new camera and I have to say on a quick testing it is brill and as I said earlier seems so much quicker than the G5! The camera shop I deal with have a website business too (www.cameramart.co.uk)

Does the G6 use the same bright, white light for an AF assist in low light?
Any idea whether the G6 uses the red AF assist from the EX flashes (I doubt it)?

Could you please go to this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=287388#287388)? There is a question about the new soft bundled with the G6 having any notable enhancements or not.

Hi sorry didn't get back sooner with the queries - yes it does use white light but on the test photos we did we think it is better than the G5 - will take some photos to put up - unfortunately work has really got in the way this week!! Also think the new updated zoombrowser is much better.

Anyone has the G3 and are about to upgrade to G6 and if the converter lens can fit on the G6? I know for sure that the G3 converters can fit on the G5 but G5 converters cant fit on the G3, weird eh???

Hi Laura-

Don't mean to be a pest - just wondered if you had a chance to test out low light focus performance yet.

Also - have they improved the image freezing on the LCD during continuous mode?

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Laura-so - have they improved the image freezing on the LCD during continuous mode?
Thanks,
Michael
Side Note: Canon fixed the LCD freezing on the S1 IS with a firmware update that greatly improved performance, so I would expect the G6 to already have this update. I have an S1 and used it before the update and can verify a significant improvement in AF in Continuous Mode (not much change in Single AF mode.)

Alnath,

that wasp is great

Don't say the focus is so fast that you could gat that one 'on the fly'!!!

Best regards,
Andy

Hi Michael - not really had chance to try the camera - work has really got in the way - but this morning we're on our way to Cornwall for 2 weeks so will be able to try it out - did try a test piece (not good enough to put up though) and I found the focusing to be better than the G5.

I don't think the image freezing on the LCD is much better but again will give it a good try and will post while we are away, but overall I much prefer the G6 - Mal has also tried the G6 (he has a 300D) and likes it much better than the G5 - Mal actually thought the G5 was quicker in continuous shooting mode (I still have the G5 at the moment until I sell it)

By the way Alnath - great photos and by the way we do give a toss!!!

I bought the G6 last friday, has taken quite a lot of pics this wekeend. *very* impressed with the job Canon has done with this 7mp CCD. The Afocus speed is *fast* and precise, have tried it now in a dark closet and it gets the focus fast and efficient. My last Dcam was a Nikon 4500cp and this cam is just so much better in every way(exept one the Nikon is made of magnesium(or some kind of hard metal)) Im looking now for a way to upload some pics. I love this camera so much its rather uncanny. Its a dream to use, controls, LCD, macro, damn i love this cam.

Hey - thanks for the info - have they improved visibility of the LCD at angles off 90 degrees?

On holiday in Cornwall for 2 weeks - will try and post some photos but very slow connection on the mobile phone! I agree with Vemund - for me it is a dream to use - feels so much better and the focus is great. Tried the camera in the cottage where we are staying with just one small light on and got quite a good photo of our dog and round the cottage - fast focus.

I think the LCD view is a lot better - it generally seems clearer and obviously is bigger at 2".

You certainly chose the right time to come down. In this heat you will be able to see what the noise levels are like in high temps ;)

What area are you staying in?

*UPDATE*
The kind folk at akam.no has made room for a G6 gallery.
My 100% straigt from cam samples is at:

Hello! I just couldnt bear it any longer and called Best Buy and they had two G6's they just received, and those two didnt make it to the floor yet. They held one for me. It's my first digital camera and I took it for a spin yesterday.
Sorry I can't post any pics now, my laptop is being returned, and I also need to learn how and where to post samples.
I did notice that in bright sunlight it was impossible to see the lcd and I had to rely totally on the camera to focus and take the pics for me. Also I am not used to the 80% view that you get with the optical viewfinder. What do you pros out there do for bright sunlight? Is there anything else to do when you cant view the lcd? Guess this is common with all digital cams?
I was taking pics of moving horses and carriages and most of these newbie pics came out pretty nice in terms of focus and color in highest jpeg resolution (just using the cameras auto setting, and no post processing). I tried the video as well and since video was not a priority for me, I consider it more as a bonus with this camera. I noticed that when shooting a movie in bright sunlight, or inside a store with bright interior lights, there would be purple streaks in the video from these kinds of bright light sources. If you are a couple feet away from the camera the voice levels are ok but if you are shooting at people quite a few feet away, they sound like they are in a tin can. I viewed these movie clips on my small tv. Also the movie clips would stutter with windows media or the window movie program that came with my laptop. Not sure if this was due to the capabilities of the movie software or my laptop. But viewing the clips in the camera or on the tv, the movies did not stutter.
Pardon if this was long, just hoped I might be able to provide some more info for anyone wanting to purchase this camera. I just need to work out the technique for bright pics in sunlight. I just love this G6 though!!!!!! Appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!!!!!! :)

I always swing the LCD out to the side when I take a photo. In bright sunlight, I tilt the LCD up or down or sideways until I get the best view. You'll never get a perfect view, but you can still see your composition.

Hi Basiltoo we are staying near Lanhydrock (nr Bodmin) - I noticed in the photos I took yesterday that when it was on Landscape or Auto I got better colours, but in the P mode very white - we thought that was caused with such bright sunlight - going to the Minack theatre today so will try and see. Still can't post as using the mobile phone to connect and too slow!

As for the lcd in bright sunlight - I tilt it but it has been sooo bright that I too have had trouble and use the viewfinder and display panel.
