View Full Version : How Fast Is Your Internet Connection?

Since I have a very fast dsl connection, I often post larger pictures and I take it for granted that others will be able to download the posts with no problem.
However, I am trying to take other's situations into account from now on, and I am curious what most users here have for an internet connection.

I have ADSL, 3500kb/s down - 325kb/s up

Hey, I can remember we had exactly the same poll a few months ago.
I have ADSL, 1120 kbit/s download and 352 kbit/s upload.

Doh! Really? Sorry about that.
Well, things change quickly in the computer world.

Still laboring along with dial up ... DSL and cable have finally arrived in the sticks where I reside, and I hope to make the switch soon. Now if you count the workplace ... where none of us use the internet for personal business  ... then we're talking high speed.

I'll second HJ on that . . . across the board.

2 years ago I got ADSL 512, then last year they raised it to 1MB (price remained same) and couple of days ago they raised it to 2MB (price remained same). I guess next year I'll have 4MB :)

I have a regular old dialup account at home, but I use a T1 line at work.

Up to DS3 could mean anything, like 10Kbps.

Surely you are not telling us that you have DS3 to your own computer!

That's true!

Actually, my particular plan is up to 8Mbps (or is it 12Mbps?). However, Yahoo! Broadband is advertising 45Mbps. That's their big marketing thing now in Japan. They're almost on every street corner. Anyway, they'll obviously over subscribe (everyone does it) and it'll all be statistically multiplexed so actual throughput will vary. That's why I say "up to". Most people don't realise that you don't always get what you think you pay for. Besides, the other end might be the bottleneck so sometimes 10Kbps or less is what I'm going to get.

But yeah, you can get 45Mbps connections now in Japan. There are many plans from 3xMbps to 2xMbps down to 4Mbps. Cheap too! I believe the Yahoo! Broadband package is around $30-35/mo. Yep, Japan is an internet surfer's paradise! :) Too bad I'm leaving at the end of this year.

45Mbps?
That's crazy.
I've got ADSL at home (384Kbps or somewhere arund there  down, and 128 up)

But daaaamn! 45 Mbps? we're talking 2" fiber optics comin down the chimney :D

I'm happy with my DSL connection though.

Proper fiber optic strands are about the size of a human hair.

True, but you can't transmit 45Mb in one sec serially through a hairsized fiber optic strand. :D You need many.

I hate you :D
Having lived in Sweden for 2 years I know how Scandanavia/Nordic area progresses much faster than the rest of the world with stuff like this.
I miss it

Actually, no. With a single pair of fibre optic strands (one for transmit and one for receive), you can have connection of up to 2.4Gbps. Yes, giga! That's a standard SDH STM-16 connection. I believe in the U.S. it's called OC-48.

Just imagine how fast the connections get with multiple strands! They exist already through the use of wavelength division multiplexers. :)

Fiber optics is the way of the future. Once we do away with copper cables and get fiber connections to every home, then... :D

As Aylwin correctly pointed out, this is simply false.

OC-48 (2.4Gbps) is transmitted one-way through a single fiber. In fact, OC-192 (10Gbps) can be, as well.
