I heard that there's a new 10-15000 f/1.6 L IS coming out. By all accounts, it's physical dimensions are comparable to those of the Hubble Space Telescope, which would explain why Canon are hinting at offering a "bundle price" if you buy the new lens along with an old Chieftan tank.
Sounds interesting. :)

The 100-400 L IS is a tried and proven lens. I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone that has anything bad to say about this lens.
On the other hand you could be waiting for a new lens that could turn out to be not quite what they tout it to be.

Besides the weight, the problem is that this lens doesn't
perform well unless it is stopped down to f2.8, and it also
has a backfocus problem... :-)

and I've heard that it smells awful, especially on warm days.

The 100-400L is nearly identical in form and construction to the brand-new 28-300L. It's hard to imagine they would do much to change the 100-400 except possibly upgrade the IS.

I hope they don't change the 100-400 L soon, just ordered one yesterday!

What would be real nice is a 100-400 f/4L IS, or a 200-400 f/4L IS. This would match Nikon's 200-400VR offering and let us who can't afford the series 1 cameras AF with the 1.4X on this lense. The 100-400 is a great lense, but it is long in the tooth, and could use and upgrade to a constant apeture, and the newer IS like the 70-200 2.8L IS has.
