View Full Version : Soap bubbles

Some more what to do when the weather is bad shots. I revisited trying to shoot thin film interference in soap bubbles. I have shot this before but it was amazingly non-reproducible as to whether you actually caught the interference films or just got a dull shot with no colour. Ended up using one of those halogen lamps meant for outside use (150W), diffusing it with some paper towel and getting it as close to the bubble as possible without the heat bursting it and also allowing some angle for the camera lens to get in to shoot the "panel" of intereference colours that you get. The colours and patterns you see through the lens are mind boggling as they move sometimes quite fast over the surface. If you manage to get the light panel near the top of the bubble you get amazing shapes forming just before the bubble bursts where black "holes" appear in the surface and spread. I think this is caused by the soap film thinning to the point where it is thinner than the wavelengths of light being used.
Shots are not brilliant from the focus point of view but you get the idea. I was blowing bubbles around 2 to 3" in diameter to at least try and get a fairly flat target panel.

Thanks Alistair :)
I was using fairly thick washing up liquid (about 3:1 water to detergent) and blowing the bubbles with a straw dipped in it. Just be careful of the end of the lens when the bubbles burst- I was using my 105mm which has a fairly recessed lens - i also for the very first time used the sun shade thingy on the end of the lens to help prevent glare from the light source.

Looks pretty cool Brian! I went the other direction recently shooting the spaces between the bubbles and the bubble walls.

Thanks for the comments Joan, John Mark and MJ
Mark - don't know what you mean :)
Did remind me of some of the psychedelic light shows you used to get on the 60s/70s.
You must have had fun if you still remember it :)
