I just got the 580EX II flash with the Lumniquest Promax System. When shooting pics landscape wise the flash is in the up right position. But, when shooting portrait style how do I do that so the diffuser works correctly. I am quite lost...

With that system the only practical way to use it with the camera in vertical orientation is to use a camera-rotating flash bracket.

In reality, the bracket is cumbersome and awkward, so if I'm not shooting a paid gig I just zoom out, keep the camera horizontal and crop the sides off later.

Not totally.
Truth is, even with some of the other "diffuser" products that work better with a vertical camera, the light source is still offset to the side somewhat and you'll get shadows. There really is no substitute for a flash bracket. A fact of life, I'm afraid.

One product that's somewhat better in this regard is the Joe Demb flip-it, which mounts on the side of the flash so you can swivel it for vertical shots. You'll still have the shadow issue though.

Hmmm... I just mainly do portrait style photos and I need something to use as a duffuser...

The Lumiquest Pro Max system is your best bet. Add a camera flip bracket.
The next step is off camera lighting.....best way to do it. :)
