Hello everyone, i just had a quick question i hope someone will be able to answer. I have a Canon ixus 500 camera and when i load an image into Photoshop the resolution is shown at the maximim (2592x1944) but the dpi is only showing 180. With these setting the size of the image is very large (Much larger than i actually require to print).

So the question is, to print at say 10x8 or 6x4 and at 300 dpi (which i believe is roughly the equivalent of a non digital camera), do i simply up the 180 to 300.

When i do this i then need to reduce the size of the image to bring the resolution back within the original maximum (i.e. 2592x1944).

Is this the right way to go about this in Photoshop?

My mate has a Kodak and when images are opened in Photoshop the default is 300dpi, so this is not an issue.

Thanks very much for your help, hope it makes sense.

Resolution (in dots per inch) is purely a function of your display software and only dictates the size of the image on your monitor (ignoring screen maginfication, of course). You have a finite number of pixels to work with, so your 2592x1944 image becomes roughly 14.4 inches by 10.8 inches. If you open it at 300 dpi, it becomes roughly 8.6 inches by 6.5 inches. The important thing to remember is what is the minimum reasonable resolution you can print at. Most printers will do a good job at 200 dpi, so a 12 X 8 print is likely to be okay.
