Hello everyone, i just had a quick question i hope someone will be able to answer. I have a Canon ixus 500 camera and when i load an image into Photoshop the resolution is shown at the maximim (2592x1944) but the dpi is only showing 180. With these setting the size of the image is very large (Much larger than i actually require to print).

So the question is, to print at say 10x8 or 6x4 and at 300 dpi (which i believe is roughly the equivalent of a non digital camera), do i simply up the 180 to 300.

When i do this i then need to reduce the size of the image to bring the resolution back within the original maximum (i.e. 2592x1944).

Is this the right way to go about this in Photoshop?

My mate has a Kodak and when images are opened in Photoshop the default is 300dpi, so this is not an issue.

Thanks very much for your help, hope it makes sense

Veslay,

welcome to the forum!

No big deal here, in Photoshop you should have a menu item called 'picture size'. (I'm not 100% sure how it's called, as I'm using the German version of Photoshop LE).

In this menu item, you can set a new picture size by either selecting the pixel count on the top or the picture size and DPI on the bottom.

When you unclick the checkbox 'recalculate image', then the pixel count can no longer be changed, and you can change the resolution to 300 dpi.

Then your picture will be printed smaller, but not a single pixel will be lost.

Best regards,
Andy
