So the story says:
November 2007
13th In an interesting mail we were sent, which updated some details of the material we had in September, it would seem that there will be no 1D Mk. IIIN and no 1D Mk. IV... It's the 1Dx (or whatever 'x' is ;-)
"The 1DMk3 AF issues have been a great embarrassment for Canon. The camera is not selling as well as hoped. The D3 and Nikon's new lenses are now seen as a serious threat to the sports and photojournalism market segments.
The 1D III was intended to be a ground-breaking camera, but now is considered 'Kyou' or bad luck, attributed to it being the 4th camera in the 1D Series.
The new camera -will- be a 1D but with a new name - expect it to appear in Aug/Sept of 2008"
Some 'headline' specs
* Same form factor as current 1 Series
* Full Frame 16MP sensor (end of 1.3 crop cameras)
* ISO 100 to 6400 (expandible 50 and 12800)
* Live View with contrast detection AF and HD Video capture (It is considered this will revolutionise photo journalism and meet growing requirement for web news video and cross media feeds).
* Stills can be grabbed from HD Video capture but only at 2MP resolution.
* 1.3x crop mode with viewfinder masking and reduced size RAW (10MP) with significantly improved buffer for cropped RAW images
* 10 fps, buffer similar for FF images.

If that's the case, they're basically copying Nikon. I hope this is all true :)

That would be cool, I can trade my N for a N

I would like to see it but if Canon sticks to their normal ways it will just be a worthless update with a few changes.
I would like to see Canon leave Nikon in the dust with all of their cameras but they are really going to have to step it up a little.

This is really nothing more than speculation.

Well, that would get my attention! If it were true....

this thing is total bogus... video capture and photo capture use different chips (digic ii has a still and video model, slight tweaks to maximize the efficiency), and the biggest issue is in heat dissipation... as of now there is no way to selectively lower the number of active receptors in a chip, which means that every sensor will put off heat. 1d has maybe 10 min of liveview before it needs to have a cooldown (in warm weather), so that's a no go... the entire thing of having the 1d be a video camera replacement will not work, it's just plain uncomfortable, and canon is probably smart enough to know that it's not worth it cramming more garbage in there..

It'll affect the sales of their XLH1 HDV (if HDV) or other camcoders

Yes, but more importantly, it would affect the sales of their competitor's camcorders. Imagine, a multi-purpose photo/movie tool for journalism that creates high quality stills and HD movies. Only one system to buy, only one person to operate.
I think that news outlets would like that.

If the sales are hurting so bad why is the price still the same at $4500. I never get tired of specualtion that goes against all knows laws of physices and economics. Makes for good POTN entertaniment.

usually when you cram two good products into one (1d series camera and canon hd camcorder) you get one crappy product that cant do either well
this is just a horrible idea if you ask me
please leave these two separate. at least until you can make a compact camera that does both well. (the tx1 was a joke to most people)
the rest of the stats look nice but ive always liked the idea that canon split their top of the line model into two (the 1dmkIII and 1dmkIIIs) because i dont know anyone that does sports and wedding so having one thats more specially suited for your needs seems like it would be quite nice.

It would be a disaster to introduce a new version or new camera at this time...

Definitely not a spec I go for these days. I hate taking video.
