Looking for a good point and shoot camera with zoom - spending about 200 - 250 pounds...what do you recommend?

What would you be using it for and how compact?

for the compacts, any of the higher end A series (if you want control and don't mind the size)

supercompacts, then the ixus range - sleek, but limited control.

prosumer - s5is. Handled one. Love it.

SX100 IS or S5 IS. Both will fit all your needs! Beauteful models!

Camera is mostly for holiday use....but that could be anywhere in the world shooting anything. Just back from safari in africa - but just wants something compact but powerful...is that possible in this budget?

I'd run with the s5is. You should be able to pick that up quite handily for that budget.

Caveat : you will need a tripod for the zoom end to get sharp shots.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about the G9.
