I recently bought the Newswear Digital Chestvest for working in crowded and hectic situations. I used it Sunday at the large RNC Protest March. It is great. There is nothing on your back for someone to grab, no weight dragging on your waist, and no restriction of shoulder movement. I used it to carry a 10D, 1D Mark II, 70-200 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, towel, card wallet, extra BP511. I highly recommend it.

Those vests look like they put a lot of gear on your front. Doesn't that get in the way of your arms?
I kind of like a traditional photographer's vest that puts the pockets around your hips.

Looks intereting.
Did you notice in the picture that the model is putting the camera in the bag with out the dust cap on

Hi Bob,
I found it a little awkward at first as it gets in the way of the natural sway of the arms when it is fully loaded, but you adapt to it. Once you get a camera and lens out, you dont notice it. My biggest concern in a crowd is someone grabbing something while I'm working. There is really very little to grab with this. I found out about this on Rob Galbraith's forum.

Scott

I think that must be a New York City thing.
For some of the places I go, if there is another human being within ten miles of me, that seems crowded. The only thing that is trying to swipe something from me is a hungry coyote looking for food.

Have you ever been stopped and searched in that thing? Looks like you're some kind of suicide bomber.

This looks like the sort of outfit the tour riggers wear, but with larger pockets..
When your dangling from a wire 85 feet above another 30 or so stage hands setting up the truss for a rock show.. you don't want your tools falling out.. and you want them right up front within easy visible reach.
Ocf course most of those guys have the same thing in the upper left hand pocket.. a straw and some white powder....
They Need something to get them to stay hanging upside down for so long!

I actually was a little concerned that people would think that. I only got a few strange looks, but not from the police. Apparantly these vests are pretty popular with some PJ's.

Scott,
I went to the Newswear site, and they show this rig in use in all sorts of environments with the police and military, so I'm guessing it doesn't raise any flags. The general public, however, is a different story.

I am curious how this would compare to something like the Tamrac belt with their suspenders. I can see the Newswear stuff is more PJ oriented.

I hate any weight dragging at my waist. The Newswear Vest allows you to adjust the shoulder straps so that the gear is off your hips/waist and the weight is only on your shoulders.

Cool - Penn Camera is noted as a dealer - I'll have to check it out the next time I go there.
I am struggling with the balance between having all that I need with me, not getting worn out having all of it on my shoulder, and not looking like a camera geek every time I go out somewhere.

Hell, I complain about that even when I don't have any camera gear with me.

I notice that it's a digital vest. Is there also one for film shooters?

I realize that your kidding, but is important to specify the Digital model because it has a large pocket for 1 Series bodies. The prior models didn't have that.

Glad to know that they are not using "digital" just to hype the product.

I don't know that guy ... for all I wouldn't know, he might be the new Henri Cartier-Bresson, but ...
I would dive for cover if I saw that guy wielding his black boxes like in the picture  .

Being in the military and always going through training for security, I have NEVER seen one of these yet. At first and from a distance, if you weren't holding a camera, you would have barrel of a riffle pointed at you :) well, even if you were holding a camera... That is a really weird looking pack but very convient!
I really like my Computrekker. Even when I do not have my computer in there that thing is always with me. It is pretty hard to open it up without me noticing it too... Unless i'm really into shooting something... thats with the camera... not the gun....
