A couple B & W waterfall photos

Hi, everyone,

I thought maybe I'd try posting a few pics to get some feedback. I took these at Cornell this past winter (although, we are rapidly approaching the next winter). Shots were done with a G3 (and some of the last winter photos that will be; just ordered my 20D :D ) I made them B&W because I thought it conveyed the chill of the winter a bit better. Comments are welcome and appreciated!

saw your photos. my comments are

1. they don't grab me, ie. if I see them in a store, I would not purchase them. Just my consumer opinion. Just trying to help.
2. Good idea re: B/W = chill
3. Where did you pre-order the 20D? :D

I like this first one. The only comment I would have about the first photo though is I dont know how well using long exposure photography with water in a B&W format and alot of snow in the picture works. The images seems to have alittle too much white. Maybe a little fast exposure or a normally metered exposure would work better. But like I said, i like the photo, keep'em comin! :D

Thanks for the comments....As for lots of white, that's pretty much how it is here for a good five months of the year :) Snow, snow, and more snow....not that I mind, I find it quite pretty.

I actually ordered my 20D from OneCall (http://onecall.com/), since they seemed to the have the one with the EF-S 17-85MM lens. Now just have to wait patiently for it to ship.

My printer is down .. maybe the "cheap" inks that I am using... so nice to see these images of NY State.

Both look dull. All that you have to do is set full black & white levels on the histogram in PS -- that will give more punch.

I prefer color in the winter.
I get a lot of comment on my color saying that B & W would be fine. Not so. You have gorgeous oportunities.. with green, bluish shadows ( I tend to gray down), yellows, and any reds too.

The problem here is simply the scene.
It is just fine -- but not outstanding, partly due to the routine look of the building. All you can do is look for another location. Most likely the lakes and natural falls would be frozen. That sugests that you will have to get out this winter before the area freeze. I would say that you will be OK in December and early January.
- Keep the color on.
-How about giving us a small bonfire (for the reds).. or ..
- a sleigh ride ... or
- snowshoeing.
- or Frost's "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" ?

I *almost* like the first image - there are some interesting lines and points of interest there, but they don't quite come together...

I would like to see more of the wheels and gears just blow the building - perhaps a portrait shot including the building - the contrast between the hard edges of the industrial machinery and the soft curves of the snow covering look quite interesting from a distance...

The spillway has an interesting pattern as well, but in these pictures it is getting a little lost in all the other elements - perhaps a simpler composition that crops out much of the surrounding environment and highlights an irregularity in the pattern, or another compositional element may be more satisfying.

I tend to agree with earlier suggestions that the contrast could use a bit of a tweak as well.

Lots of potential here - certainly worth a return visit I would think...
