External Hard Drive (usb 2.0)

I saw a 80 gig external hard drive at Kmart and am wondering if this wouldnt be a good purchase and save from burning so many DVD / CD's

has anyone used a device like this or thinkiing about it.

Cost was a little over $100.00.

I have USB and IEEE1394 external harddisk cases and drives (one goes as high as 160GB because it's cheap.)

I don't think that it replaces DVD / CD backup. It is not safe to store everything in a harddisk as it may eventually fail some time later.

I'm currently running 3 external drives as backups.
#1 is for system backup
#2 is for photo backup
#3 is a little 2.5" portable that I take with me on the road for photo storage and doc backups.
I still burn all my "keeper" images to CD and make 2 copies. Paranoid huh? :lol:

I have recently added 2x250 meg LaCie Porsche Design USB external drives.

They seem to work very well. I download raw files to one of my normal hard drives and "archive" to the LaCie's. I'm not relying on them as the sole back-up, but I get the comfort of dupe copies fairly quickly and easily.

I recently added a Maxtor One Touch 160GB external HDD with USB2.0 and Firewire. It works great.
I suggest saving your original files to DVD in case of drive failure.

Multiple copies of CD or DVD are best.
I also back up to another hard drive on my PC.
I even back up my C: drive to my e: drive regularly, in MSDOS, independent of windows...and I can restore my c: drive using a diskette and the backup image.

The program I use is Norton Ghost. Works great. I will work from windows too.

You can restore files from the saved image too, or the whole partition or disk.
