We had a horse drawn carriage Christmas parade the other day in town. I had my 350D w/ 70-200 2.8 around my neck snapping pics. I hate using the strap, btw. There was a guy there w/ 2 1Ds. One w/ 70-200, one w/ 300 2.8 and a 400 by itself. All on Nikon straps. Yes, he had Canon gear. I jokingly said, "It's almost sacrilegious to have Canon gear on Nikon straps." He started to bite my head off about a strap is a strap and blah blah blah. The guy next to him, not with this guy, though, chuckled because he was using Nikon gear. Everyone knew it was a joke, except this twit. I did my best Sgt. Hulka impression and said, "Lighten up, Francis." He got pissed off and walked away. What a jerk. He embarrassed himself and some of the people around us knew him personally and apologized to me, my wife and our kids for his behavior. It all goes back to "professional" being an attitude versus what the cost of your kit is.

Now what in hell do you need a 300 and 400 for at a parade?!

That is funny, But there might have been some underlined anger already.
A friend of mine shoots using a 5D, and has a selection of lense. The one thing he wanted was a nice gear bag for his gear for our trip to mexico last year.
For Christmas he wife bought him a really nice gear bag just the right size big enough for his 5D 70-200mm / 300mm and flash. However it was a nikon bag! She found this at some discount store or something for dirt cheap brand new it was something like $99 and she got it for $15 ( go figure its nikon :D )
Well when i heard about it i laughed, but when i seen the bag it was really nice. Anyways we went on our trip and we did this whale watching trip and everyone was walking around with canons and he got on and put his bag down and i could not resist myself, 3 of the other photographers on the bench we where on where shooting with canon so i said in a loud and bold voice " Sir, sorry this is the CANON section you will have to take your fancy nikon bag and junk to the other side of the boat". I Swear i thought he was going to throw me overboard :D

I made somewhat of the same comment to my wife. I'll give him the 300, but a 400? Oh well.

I could see using a 300 at a parade, but 400 would be a bit long unless you wanted severe detail shots haha.

Perhaps he was checking to see if the models had trimmed their nose hair.

Or bikini lines. ;)
To the OP: After his friends defended his attitude, I'd have said something about the large stick up his nethers, it's need for extraction, and how the malady was most likely self-inflicted because it was the only way a small-minded person could put himself above everyone else.

Actually, his "friends" were ashamed of his behavior, but the rest is dead on.

I think the real issue here is the OP doesn't like to use his strap.... I think that's sacrali.... sakreligeou.... sackra... that's bad. The strap is good and helps you not drop the camera:evil:

Some people are just like that. They are have something up there to cause problems. I brought something from a camera store and told a little joke as he put the canon acc in a nikon bag :) However the guy didn't like it.
Gee people lighten up.

I don't use a strap at all, in fact it's not even attached my 40D
