I am considering buying one of these two as a backup to a digital SLR. Before I pull the trigger on it, can anyone offer any advice as to the differences between the two? They're both 8.0MP but the SX100 IS is $50.00 more.
Any advice or insight is appreciated.

Well, the SX100 has a 6-60 mm zoom (10x, 36-360 mm EFL) while the A720's 5.8-34.8 (6x, 35-210 EFL). The A720 also has an optical viewfinder while the Sx100 doesn't. Personally I wouldn't get a camera without optical VF.

As Jon said SX100 has 10x Optical Zoom and A720 only 6x. This is the main difference. So if you like high zoom, then SX100 is for you, otherwise A720 fits all your needs except zooming in the far.

Thanks for all the input, I actually went with the A650.
