it's a great pity that the feet are missing in pictures 3, 6, 7 and 8
but I magine it's difficult enough to get so many pictures so very well .

Yes Marie.. there are times that I wish the 70-200mm was a 50-200mm :wink:

I try to take both full body shots and "knee up shots" to get in closer of all the designs.. ... this time around it just seemed the knee up shots were better.

I'm most bummed about the top of the one models head being lopped off :(

Great shots CDS. These picture got me wondering though. Is there any rule regarding where to crop body shots. I've found when you crop off the feet it doesn't look right. The last shot you cropped above the knee looks great. So I'm guessing if you can get the whole body, head an feet great. If the feet will not fit, crop above the knees?

I also wish the 70-200 was 50-200 myself! :D

Great shots. I took a few shots at a pageant type thing last Spring with my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS... I've been planning to get the 70-200 f/2.8 L for some time... and these shots just set that thought into stone.

I'm curious what ISO you were using, and did you use manual mode, or aperture mode set to f/2.8 and let the camera determine the shutter?

Good point.. These are of course 8MP MkII files so I could certainly crop more on some of these.. the trouble is I want to show the whole outfit.. really should have zoomed back farther.

Yep.. the 70-200mm is pretty nice for this type of thing. And I do use all 200mm often as I have to be so far "in the wings"

This would be a mix of AV and Manual. ISO was set to 500 most of the time, f/2.8 and f/3.5

A very nice group of shots for me to mull over in my brain on a travel day. We're off to Reno for the weekend to see David Bromberg.

BTW, is this fashion show an annual thing for you? Seems you had some similar shots last year, too.

Actually the event is very bright.. (The lighting was mine :) I made plenty sure it was well lit!)......... the brightet event that ever graces my stage.

But there is a difficult area.. the actual runway .. because it is surrounded by audience. there is only front light. (as demanded by the School of Design who don't want to blind the Versace scouts) So the shots with deep contrasty shadows are a result of taking shots from the side.. with only this VERY contrasty front light.

If I were able to be seated with the audience, my angle would have given me acces to the front light, but I am literaly shooting into the light at this point.. way off to the side and slightly into the light.

No.. the fault is mine .. These images were taken in early May and this was the forirst time I had used the MkII in "threatre" lighting. I tried to rely on the onboard metering in aperture priority a little to much.. last year I had better luck with the 10D in full manual.

I went with aperture priorty because of the dramtic differenece in lighting from the center stage position (perfect totally surinded with light, top, front back and side.. ) to the catwalk...

What I should have done is set up the Mnaul for the center stage,. and switched to aperure on the fly as they approched the catwalk. This is unfortunelty HARDER to do on the MkII.. with the 10D I cna simply twist a dial.. on the mkii there is a buch of buttons involved.. and I would need to take my eye out of the viewfinder and look at the top of the camera :(

Anyway.. far too many shots were underexposed.. I actually have found that where I can shoot with the 10D at top dead center exposure.. the MkII alomost ALLWAYS is requiring plus 2/3rds or more of EC. I did not know this yet when shooting the fashion show.

Btw, I notice you made a point of saying "zero processing".
I would personally add some sharpening to the images to give them a little more pop, and also to fight any softening from resizing for the web.

I made the point.. yes .. it is not a choice.. thess were shot large fine jpeg,. and have not even been cropped..

I don't do this often.. (show unprocessed images to anyone) but this time I just thought I'd literally "throw some images online" straight out of camera.

When I pick some "printers" I'll do the whole shebang :)

p.s. I have never "resharpened" a resized image either.. I know I'm supposed to.. but I'm too lazy. I know I should though.. resizing to 500 wide takes all the "bam" out of an image :(
