I know that I'm not the only one to have bought my camera (10D) from an individual instead of a retailer, that has an unused registration/warranty certificate. Since Canon (and others) want the retailer, and or a copy of the sales receipt, in order to validate the warranty. . . what are some of you others doing to cover this?

Online.

Guess what, if you need warranty work though, you need a receipt.. I just delt with canon and I had to have the shop I bought the lens from fax a copy of the receipt up before they would even look at it. I did the ONLINE registration of the warranty also... That doesn't matter... If you bought the product from a unauthorized dealer ie: Ebay or if it is grey market chances are if you break it, your going to pay for it. This is why they wanted the receipt to make sure I bought it from an authorized dealer...

Funny thing is, the dealers put the serial # in the system because the dealer asked me for my zip code and I was out of state where I bought it and I told him I was out of state and he said it didn't matter because it was for canon for their warranty. He enters the serial # plus my zip code... Well, how come I still needed my receipt then??

I have not had trouble getting warranty work with ANY receipt.

SOme purchases were from Canon dealers and others were not.

I by my gear at a local reputable dealer that's well thought of by the camera community and has been in business for many years.

They fill out all the paperwork.. If anything goes wrong during the warranty period, I just drop by the store, hand the gear to them and they promptly look after everything else at no cost to me.

that isn't true, I've registered 2 lenses online and had the dumentation sent to me by canon with extra cover information.
They've never asked for a receipt

I wonder what the Sale of Goods Act (UK) has to say about this. It makes the retailer wholly responsible for goods sold for a year from date of purchase.

What the retailer does with the offending article is his(her) problem.

Have you had any work done on the lens yet??? I have NEVER had to provide the receipt for the registration... It is for the WARRANTY work... Who cares about the registration.. Hell, The State of Ohio just busted BEST BUY because Some guy found out that he thought he bought a BRAND NEW laptop and here it has been REGISTERED twice before.. and this has happened a few times already and also with appliances... Registration doesn't mean much.... Wait till you have to get WARRANTY work done... Make sure you have your receipt and it was bought from a Canon dealer and not off Ebay, Grey market, or some dude on the corner...
