I have done a small around of band type stuff, it is challenging but feels so good when those great shots come around.
Great work, I really enjoyed this set.

Interesting stuff. I shoot a lot of underground stuff too, but most of the stuff I shoot isn't really high energy, so I don't get into the flash/shutter dragging stuff much. Looking at your photos makes me want to give it a try more often. I think the flash is a bit overpowered in 2 and 7 though...and on that note, standard procedure around here is to number the photos so it is easier for people to comment on them.
So welcome to the forums, and I hope to see more of your stuff. Oh, and I think you'll find there are several keen concert photogs around here.:D

im still trying to learn how to use my 430EX properly so that will explain the overpowered flash. i am glad people like them!
I shoot with a 400d, sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye, sigma 10-20mm and 430EX flash
(and ocasionaly use my 18-55mm and my 50mm f/1.8 )
altho i'm looking at upgrading to a 5D + 24-105mm f/4 L IS
what style of bands do you generaly photograph?

i think 5D is just way overpriced.
I would get the 40D if I had to upgrade.

Most of what I do is referred to as the DIY (or house show) scene...it's like music that is too indie for indie, if that makes any sense. I do my share of "crappy little bar" shows and occasionally I'll shoot at a real venue. I'd like to shoot more garage rock type shows, because that is the type of music that I really like, but we really don't get many good shows like that around here...just wanna-be mainstream rock, lots of metal, punk, you know the usual stuff.

I don't think the 5D is overpriced, but the performance of the 40D (and new lenses like the Sigma 10mm 2.8 fisheye) make the upgrade decision a little more difficult.

Hey dude, awesome to see some good ol' Kiwi Punk rawk here among the internationals!
Loving your dragged shutter stuff - it's certainly a shame a lot of bands aren't allowing flash these days - it's been months if not years since I've shot with a flash!

If I had ever considered getting a tattoo across my belly this set would discourage me! :-) Lovely work, nice set, a little heavy on the shutter-drag and a little small, but lots of energy and fun.

i'm after the 5d as i have used my mums one (she also has a 40D) and i much prefer the 5d. also really like the full frame sensor.
cheers for showing me the site umbra. in saying about the use of flash keep in mind the shows i photograph generally have very poor lighting and if i try without a flash they just look terrible. i prefer to shoot with no flash when i can but i don't often have the chance
haha music that is too indie for indie. i know exactly what you mean. theres a fair few of those bands around NZ too, some of them are awesome, however some of them are just terrible
