Coming back home to Everett WA from Spokane for Tday. I had many chances to take shots of Hawks sitting on posts/Lights/fences right along the freeway. But I was too afraid to just pull off and take a shot.
So Confession time, How many of you do ????

Rob.
EDDIT I do only stop were your allowed to stop - our cops have a mandate to perscute all motorist's.

no stopping on busy highways for me - put I do confess to parking on narrow country roads near my house. Always feel kind of stupid when someone else comes along.

Well, I've WANTED to, but so far stick my stopping to country roads with little traffic. If there is no pull-off or edge, I have been known to stop in the middle of the road and grab a shot, with cars waiting for me to move. For the most part, people are nice---and forgiving of my hobby. But one of these days I will probably get wiped out by some one
playing with his radio or something. :(

I've stopped on highways (the shoulders) to take photos of birds, but not freeways in
California. I have in Nevada, but I was told by a friendly State Trooper that they would
prefer that to trying to shot out of the car window while driving...:)

We did a trip down to Gainsville FL for some cave diving, and on the way back we seen so many opertunities the one time we did stop it caused so much crap with traffic, why is beyond me as we where not blocking any lanes however about 20 mins later a state trooper stopped us as they had recived complaints of "suspicious activities" and having out of contry plates it sparked more concern!
It was a hell of a time explaining to the trooper we where just taking a picture of the birds, with a van with 3 guys, and 3 full sets of CCR Dive gear with DVP's :D

We dont have anything to call a freeway, but I stop on the side of the road all of the time. The red-tails, rough legged, and kestrels almost make this a mandatory photoshoot area. ;)

I will stop where ever it is safe to do so. I recently went to Montreal and by the time I came home, I had seen about 6 hawks on branches or wires on the side of the road. Sadly, my camera was not with me as my wife had taken it to go on her Cruise in the Caribbean.

True, and we definatly are NOT allowed to stop on it. Next crossing I should drive very slow just to get my $41.50 worth.;)

I'll stop on the right shoulder in a minute! If I've got the time and the proper motivation, I'll pull over in a heartbeat. I've even crossed the interstate (rural, and not at all busy at the time...) to shoot a hawk on the ground in the median.

I frequently stop to try to shoot hawks. My success rate is poor because by the time you check traffic, pull over, get out of the car and line up the shot, the hawk is often 2 miles away and fading. I don't even try if someone is right behind me or traffic is heavy. Also the shoulder must be wide enough for me to get completely out of traffic.

On the freeway? Not a chance. Country road on the straight away, sure, no problem. In our NWR, I don't even pull over, they can go around me.

I did today on a busy highway, but there was enough room that the semi's didn't blow me off the road. After all it is Idaho, not too busy. Got some great shots of four bucks, two were fighting, but stopped when I did.
