Top shots, the lighting is excellent (and WB...:) )
Movement stopped they all look great.
The only nit pick could be missing feet.

yeah that is my only beef with the 85 as it might be a touch long for that. But I lose some feet also because I crop for 8x10 before putting up the images on my site now.
With strobes I honestly believe now a 70-200 would be absolutely perfect. But man do I love my 85 :D

Where were they setup in the gym...my son's school gym has an upper gym that would be perfect to setup my ABs on stands, one in each corner, but don't know if they'd go for that, I might ask though. Nice job on the photos.
**UPDATE**
The assistant pricipal was all for the idea when I asked yesterday, she never heard of the idea, only onboard flash. I told her to watch a college/pro basketball game and watch for the quick pulses of flash that fill the screen from time to time. I told her these venues have built in strobes overhead for the photogs...I'll be testing my AB800's today (during boys practice) and see how well the light up the place.

its better then using a flash on a camera. I find that more noticeable then the strobe I use to be honest.

I'll be putting up two AB's tomorrow when they arrive and going nuts trying to learn in the last two hours of a Wrestling Tournament...then shooting ALL day on Saturday from 9:30am-8pm on day two of the tournie...70-200 is the way to go IMO - I use it for b-ball without strobes, 85 just is never enough in the local gyms since you have to shoot from the corners and off a bit, so no reach...n on body flash is noticable in the annoying way while strobes are just noticable :)

Thanks....this is where I'd have mine too...did you use two lights? You don't have that player shadow on the far wall either....I had someone say to me "what about those in the bleachers that might have an epileptic seizure because of the flashing"....I mean I've heard of this before because I'm also a web developer at my day job and I have guidelines where I can't put anything flashing/blinking on anything I develop for this reason...it's an ADA thing...(American Disability Act)

Matt, I think you are nailing it with the strobes. Nice work bud. Only thing I might do is wrm them slightly. I think your WB is pretty good but the strobes do seem to cool things quite a bit.

The flash is so brief that most people don't even notice them. Keep an eye out at any indoor pro sports event and you'll see them, but then you'll never be able to ignore them again, so beware!

I know we consistently have photogs who use strobes in our gym's rafters and we have signs posted on the staircases and the announcer always make an announcement before the game over the loudspeaker regarding the strobes. You may want to talk with the principal about having a small announcement made before the game.

How should the sign be worded...I'll make them myself and take them in...I was thinking something like "NOTE: Strobe flash lighting in use for photography purposes".....should I add or change anything?

Geez I have never even thought of that situation. I have been to a few NBA games and nothing is said about it by a PA, on the ticket stubs or anything on the wall about using strobes at their games which I know every arena does.
My 2 AB's are on the truck and being delivered to me today so I will finally have two lights instead of just one. I am very excited to see the results from this and set them up.
They will be on both sides of the gym on the same side (if that makes sense)
I will post pictures tonight after the game of the setup and game pictures.

Geez I have never even thought of that situation.
I know....I didn't give it any thought til the janitor of the school said it to me yesterday...are there any signs up in the school where you will setup tonight...I would just make "blanket" announcement that strobe flash lighting will be in use for tonight's game.
On another note....do you think you'll have much trouble with harsh shadows on a player caused by a player in front of them (closer to the side where the strobes are)? I'm going to try to just point them slightly lower than level instead of directly down at the court and let the reflectors do the illuminating...I may need the 11" reflectors, will see.

I am not sure you need to make the statement to be honest as they don't have signs or announcements at NBA or Arena football games?
I have the 11 inch reflectors so I will see how well they do tonight. I did get some shadows (you can check out my shots on my athletics website) with the one light. But nothing that would ever make me wanna stop doing it to be honest.
I would take a strobe shot over a 3200 iso shot any day of the week. You just have to learn how to take pictures using strobes which is still a work in progress for me. Timing is everything

Amen on that...I took a couple hundred shots last night at my son's basketball game with no flash...and used ISO 3200, 2.8 on my 30D, 70-200 2.8L and I hate the noise.

Were you only using one AB800 on these shots? What ISO, SS, and app. were you using? What was the power setting on the flash head?

For these I had rented some strobes and only used one.
My ISO was 500, Shutter was 200 (used 200 for a bit but eventually went back to 250) not sure what app means?
Here is my exif information:
Exif IFD0
* Camera Make = Canon
* Camera Model = Canon EOS 40D
* Last Modified Date/Time = 2007-12-05 11:54:05
Exif Sub IFD
* Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 14/5 = F2.80
* Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/200 second = 0.00500 second
* Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
* Focal Length = 85/1 mm = 85.00 mm
* ISO Speed Ratings = 500
* Original Date/Time = 2007-12-04 17:22:46

AP - I have my strobes and heading to the tournament in a little bit - one problem, I dont have the cord to connect the pocket wizards to the strobes - so have to go direct and use the cord that comes with the AB's to connect to the camera - throw on the 300 and shoot from above a bit, wrestling might still get some shots but have a feeling that strobe will collect a bit of dust tonight and tomorrow until I get the cords and have to shoot the horrible ambient light, d'OH!
