View Full Version : MR14 Ring Flash + 100 mm macro

I recently obtained the MR14 ringflash to facilitate some of macrophotography. It mounts great to the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro (without a filter) on the grooved lip of the lens. Problem is, I prefer the protection filters offer, and when one is mounted on this lens, the ringflash mount can no longer reach the grooved edge of the lens lip - resulting in a less than tight mount of the flash on the lens/filter combo.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Scottes

I really don't know anything about this rig, but some thoughts...
Does your filter have both male and female threads so you can "stack" another filter on? Two of my filters allow me to "stack" filters, but my 77mm Circular Polarizer does not allow for this. Maybe you need a different kind of filter?
Or does the ringflash mount to a particular groove in that lens, and not just the filter threads?
Lastly, perhaps one of those "thin mount" filters might do, the ones made for wide-angle lenses? They barely protrude above the lens - maybe this would allow the ringflash to mount?

only a guessing (I have the 100mm, but not the MR14EX), how if you attach the things, the other way around? the ring flash first, then the filter?

Scottes and Loekito:
Good thoughts, but I tried your suggestions already, i.e. the filter doesn't mount on/over/through the ring flash if the flash is mounted first.
The ring flash mounts to an outside groove in the 100 mm macro, that about 2mm from the forward lip/edge of the lens on the outside. The groove itself is about 2 mm wide. The flash does not mount inside the filter/lens via the filter screw groove.
I will have to check to see if there is enough room in the MR14 to accomodate a "thin" filter. Alternatively, maybe I could mimic the groove by only partially screwing the filter on.
Any other thoughts?

Yep - get a Cokin 58mm A-Series adapter ring and put that on the front of a 58mm filter. The lip that combination creates is perfect for clipping the MR14 onto - the filter used can either be the one you actually wanted to use or just a ring with no glass in it, which can be fitted on the front of other filters of your choice.

I do have the MT-ex24 and I guess they both attach to the lens in the same way. in the users manual, at least for the twin lite I got , it's said that you cannot attach any filter prior to the ring, too bad but that''s the way it works. I guess that with such close photography, no need for UV or polarizer filter (canon hould have said)
