compact flash cards

It's been awhile since I've shopped for a card for my rebel and am realizing that i need to find one quickly for a trip i am embarking on in 10 days.

my question is twofold. does anyone know of any great deals out there right now, and what is the latest, greatest card?

Lexar 512MB High Speed 12X Compact Flash for $40 after rebate at buy.com. Offer ends in a few days. It claims to be fast, but my guess is that this is low performance stufff...maybe not bad as a backup card though. As for latest and greatest...sorry, I haven't been keeping up either.

12X is very slow. For the latest and greatest I'd recommend a Lexar Pro 80x or Sandisk Ultra II. I bought the Sandisk Ultra II 512MB at NewEgg for $72. Now it is $74.50 I believe.

The latest and greatest are Lexars 80X, Sandisks "UltraII" and Transcends 45X

None of which will perform at top speeds in the Rebel.. alas, but you can look here to see what will give you the best performnace.

There are great deals right now all over.. you should not have to pay more than $130.00 for a fast GB card.. in fact with rebates you can find them under $100.00

Would the (slow) Lexar 12X 512 be a good value for my wife's Canon S50; while the Lexar 40X a good value for the 10D? I can't imagine needing a high performance card for a compact digital camera...it's like putting super unleaded in a Civic? :)

Hey Ken,

I don't know if it's different on a 10D, but I did try a Lexar 40x on my 300D a while back. I filled the camera's buffer until it was full of 8 compressed jpeg images, and then I timed it writing that data to the card. The Lexar 40x took about 20 sec to write all information to the card whereas a Sandisk (I think) 1x took about 30 sec to write all information to the card. I ran the test a few times and got consistent resuts.

I don't know how those numbers are going to differ for the 10D, but maybe that will give you a basic idea of the performance gain with the 40x card. In the case of the 300D, I shaved about 33% off my write times. I hope that is helpful. :D

According to this link there is only a .058MB per second difference between the 40x & 80x Lexars. I think I'll stick with less expensive 40x. :wink:

There's not a huge difference either way as long as you stay away from REALLY slow stuff like the original Sandisk units. I've got four 512MB cards, a Lexar 40x and three 25x of different makes and don't really notice much difference.
