What's "Group Membership"

I've seen this in the user profile area, but never seen anything in it.

So, what's Group Membership, what are public groups, and is it a feature we can use, or is it inactive and we can ignore it?

It is not used here.

It can be used to give access to forums or give certain permissions in forums. There are a lot of defined and custom pricate groups that all members belong to but those are only visible to moderators and admins. Those groups controls access to the forums and which permissions members have.

A public group means that each member can request membership which is approved or denied by a group leader.
