I'm having trouble removing the BG-E3 grip off my XTI. I bought the camera/grip used and they came already assembled. I bought a battery door online and want to try the camera out without the grip, but I can't take it off!

the wheel thing won't budge. Is there a lock or something?

I don't think so, If it's similar to the grip for the 20D, I just use the wheel to detach the grip, might be wrong. The wheel just connects to a screw thread that fits into the tripod mount on the camera. Are there any visible signs of damage, that might had bent or damaged the thread? Obviously the grip and battery work?

No there isn't. If the grip's been on for any length of time, there may be a dirt buildup "locking" the retaining screw. Alternatively, the original owner may have really cranked it down tightly, in which case you'd need to apply more force and hope you don't break the retaining screw..

...or tear out material around the threads on the camera

Don't think I've ever actually removed the grip from my XTi.

My XT grip used to stick all the time. I was lucky that it just eventually loosened up enough.

This happened to me with the 400D and I was thinking about prying something on he wheel but with a few wiggles it was ok.

Dont make the mistake I did of tightening it. *blush*

hmmmm. the thread must have been messed up. i suggest of not removing the grip.

I have the grip on my 350D and I cranked it on pretty good but I also never plan on taking it off. I find the XT or XTi to small without the grip and as far as I know there is no reason to ever use my camera without the grip.

If I were you I would follow Thras`s advice and just leave the grip on permanent.

Take care.

damn, I just waisted $24 on the battery door. The only reason why I wanted it was I dont have a good LITTLE P&S so I wanted to try and make the XTI smaller for those times when space is a big concern

If you ever do get the grip off you might find you already have a battery door. There is a storage slot for it in the grip so it doesn't get lost when the grip is installed.

Try cooling the camera (not freezing ;)) this may help to loosen. Most materials expand when warm. I doubt very much the thread is damaged.

There is a place to store the battery cover inside the grip (on the part that goes into the bettery slot). If you do remove the grip, it's likely inside. :(

i accidentally slightly over tighten my battery grip the first time i got it.
what i did to loosen it, with precaution, get a flat head, tape the tip or wrap
it with something so you do not scratch anything while you do this, and just push
down on the teeth's of the screw-wheel. push down nearest to the outside because
it is much easier than pushing from the middle. hope that helps.

You're lucky, my darned battery grips don't want to stay on.

If you absolutely *MUST* have that grip off, send it to Canon. Sounds like a workmanship problem on either the grip or camera, most likely will remove them for free or at least quite cheaply.

But hey, keep the grip on. Why'd you buy a battery door anyways? You can always shoot with just one battery in the grip if you're trying to lighten the weight of the whole thing.

As bad as you feel now that you can't get it off, it's nothing compared to how bad you would feel if you damaged grip, camera, or both trying.;)

It doesnt bother me that it wont come off, i only took my grip off my 10D to clean it

Mine got stuck also and I used a flat head screw driver like above and got it lose. I have an XTi and a canon grip.

I never saw the compartment to store the battery compartment door before. I've taken my grip off and stored the battery door there now.

I should've read the instructions really. I've been carrying the battery door round in bubble wrap!

lol WOW!

if I do manage to get the grip off and the battery door IS there, thats going to be another kick in the pants! I'll try that the screw driver idea (very carefully of course ;) )

i JUST found out actually you can run the grip with only one battery, but its not the weight thats the concern, its the overall size. I'm trying to get it smaller for those times where I can lug my bag around and such

I only remove mine when I'm going to hike. Saves some weight ^^

 Stupid ebay seller told me it would only function with both batteries in. I only got my grip for the vertical shutter release. That second battery wasn't cheap! (I asked the one selling the grip, not the battery. I'm not *that* stupid lol)

Thats what I get for taking ebay advice without verifying it I suppose.

interesting... didn't know that but after reading this, i moved my battery cover that is sitting inside the box of the grip to the place it was designed for in the grip.

I learn something new here everyday from this place. :D

Ever try a bit of silicon spray dripped on the threads to reduce friction?

you cant get at or see the threads to apply it....and i would be worried just to spray some down at the wheel

Where in the grip is this storage place for the original battery door?
And...is there a hidding place on the 20D/30D/5D grips as well???

I had this problem with my brothers Xti and grip. Ultimately it was just brute force that got it undone. Its a problem quite a few have had actually.

Next stop for the OP once he gets the grip off.

Buy and Sell Forum: FS New XTi Battery Door, great for those of you that bought camera's with grips!

;)

Brute force and wiggling will get it.

took the grip off my XT for the first time in about a year the other day (forgot how tiny that camera really is!)...took a bit of pursuading, but it did finally come off.

One thing I couldn't actually remember at first was which way to turn to loosen it...counter-clockwise looking at the bottom of the camera <-- reminder for me ;)

it sits in a little slot right against the "neck" of the grip that actually goes into the body.

I couldn't get mine off my XTI either, what I ended up doing was getting a small flathead screw driver and using that as leverage to turn the dial, hard to visualize maybe.

Because I bought the camera used and it came with the grip already installed, I had NO idea that the batter door was hidden inside, so I bought a new door online. Needless to say, I have an extra battery door for an XTI now lol

There's a small slot by the "upright" that extends into the camera's battery compartment.

Found it!

Thanks Jon

And yeah this screw dial setup is juat plain STUPID. But from a recurring income standpoint it is BRILLIANT. Right up there with the phrase "Lather, rinse, repeat" on shampoo bottles.
