Decided to post a few pics from my first outing with the new water housing...

All shot with the 50mm 1.4, in raw, straight out of the camera. Just recently picked up the Tokina 10-17mm, so soon as its decent again, plan on swimming out.

Wish this one was in focus and in frame...

Great light and exposure. I wish I was out there with my board.

I sent off the money for my first housing so we'll see how hard it is. I know it's pretty difficult. I'll post up shots in a week or two.

it takes some serious getting use too.... you think being in the water half your life it wouldnt be a big deal... but who knows.

what housing did you get?

What housing and camera were those shot with? Are you shooting in TV, AV or Manual? I have a couple of shots from a few weeks ago that would have been killer if the focus was not off. I have been having better luck with the focus on my 30D than the 20D, but when I last shot with the 50mm I set my focus point close to infinity before I got in the water and hoped for the best, and got some pretty good results. Right now I am shooting with the 1.8, but hoping to upgrade to the 1.4 very soon.

Oh, I almost forgot to say I like the shots.

Hey there,

thanks for the comments. Its seriously a difficult thing to do.

I did the same, manual focus, somewhere around infinity... close to like 15-20 feet? i just kind of measured prior to getting it in the housing and went with it there. I know the fisheye will be much easier to get consistently better shots because the focus distance is much closer.

As far as program, ive been shooting with aperture priority, and opening the the lens up so i get consistent 1/1000- 1/1250 shutter speeds. Shutter priority would do the same thing technically... just adjust the shutter speed manually and waiting for the camera to figure out the aperture. been shooting with iso 100-200 with my 20d.

Its kind of a gamble trying to figure out the settings on the beach though, it finally comes down to a "point and pray" when your in the water... but the outcome if its good is an accomplishment

What housing are you using? Where are you shooting? It looks like a beach break to me, which will be pretty difficult to shoot with the fish-eye, unless you have a super consistent sand bar that you can set up on.

The first lens I shot with was my 15mm fish-eye, but the beach breaks here are so shifty that it got really frustrating, so I had a port made for my 70-200mm. This lens is great if you can stand on the sand bar on the inside and shoot but it is a bit cumbersome to swim with. So next I found that the 50mm would work in my dome port, which is what I have used for the past couple of sessions. Focus reaction time on the 1.8 seems to be a bit slow so I would really like to upgrade to the 1.4. The best part about the fish-eye, if you have a good line up to shoot, is that you can basically set the focus for infinity and then just go shoot.

Looking forward to your next posts.

I have a HCW waterhousings. Guy who made it is Chad Stickney. Super nice guy who makes quality housings and hes local for repairs or anything I need done to the housing itself.

The spot is just a local beach break, and its pretty consistent as to where it breaks. The 1.4 is way ahead of the 1.8 in focusing time, and I highly recommend it. My housing doesnt have removable ports, but, I can fit the 15mm fish, tokina 10-17, canon 50mm 1.4 and 1.8 and 85 1.8.... so im not too worried about not having a lens to go shoot with.

Love your shots as well, hopefully we both get surf to go shoot in. Its addicting though to always want to go out and shoot.
