More from the zoo file cleanup..

the second pic is a bit of an experiment. The noise was a bit high so I used it to give sort of a painting affect. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking.

Great Shots Henry, How did they get so much Noise?

Thanks Gary.

400 ISO in a bright setting. Also they were some distance away and these are 100% crops. I just forgot to change the ISO back to a lower setting. The first shot doesn't look too noisy on my monitor but the second one.. definately. I was just experimenting to see if I could make the noise work in the picture. I'm not so sure it worked.

Thanks again Gary.

I don't have photo shop yet.. I'm looking at getting CS2 around Christmas time. This was all done in DPP. Looks like PS will give me a lot of extra tools to use..

By the way, Have you updated your 40D to firmware 1.0.5? Mine's at 1.0.4 and I'm debating if I should bother.

You're right... I changed it about an hour ago not long after i posted it. It was too saturated so I backed off.

I've tried the DPP NR and it doesn't seem to do anything.

Thanks for your advice... It's good fun to try different things even if sometimes they don't work out:)

Strange... on two seperate monitors the first eagle pic looks clear except for the background.

For comparison.. could someone explain to me what they're seeing in the first pic? On my monitors the beak and the eye are very clear with no grain. Does anybody else see it that way? Second pic is definately noisey so leave that out for the comaparison.

Thanks
Henry

I have a calibrated LG Flatron 19" LCD.

#1 does look about 90% free of noise about the eye and beak, however the look quite pasty in the way a painting does. The rest of the bird looks a bit pasty to and would look quite good as an image rendered with PS to create a painting look. Such a technique can be useful to cover up noise and save a good image.

I had a twiddle. I hope you don't mind.

Thank you Wayne. I see what you mean about pasty but I don't equate that to noise. I thought noise is mostly speckled or grainy. It very well could be my misunderstanding of noise in a photo.

I'm glad you had a twiddle... It looks very nice. When I get some more PP software I'll be able to try some new things. Right now I just have DPP which I like a lot.

I appreciate your help in answering my question. You definately shed a lot more light in what's going on. No pun intended.

sorry,

my post should have included that the OP image looked pasty as a result of use of NR software.

When I use NR software for very noisy images they often turn out a bit pasty and lose their sharpness. If this occurs, result one can just turn them into B&W or Photoshop art.

If I'm feeling merciless I hit the DEL button and put myself out of the hard work trying to save it! :)

I'm with you Wayne.. there comes a point where delete is the answer.

Now I know what you mean about NR being pasty.. I've seen it first hand when I tried it on a pic of an egret. The egret looked like a lump of wax after NR.. I deleted that one:)

Thanks again for your help.
