Hi, I have an opportunity to purchase a slightly used Canon ML-1 ringlight for a good price. I'd like to use it with my Canon Rebel XTi (400D). Usually only EX flashes work right though. Could the ML-1 be made to fire even if it is at full power? I could use the aperture to control the exposure. I was thinking of mounting it on the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM. Thanks for any advice on this.

Looks like you can get a decent idea of what you are getting into via

There is a link to the manual on that page. In a nutshell it looks like the flash should be usable so long as you don't mind manually dialing in the settings, I just checked the manual really quickly though, hopefully any gotchas someone else will know of.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I think I'll just have to try it. I've read that some (most?) non EX speedlites will not fire at all on digital, not manual, not anything.

It should fire without any issues. I would advise checking the trigger voltage to make sure that it doesn't overpower your camera and fry it out.

I found a copy of the instruction manual for the ML-1 on the net:
