View Full Version : CANON G5 - Few Questions About Wide Angles, and Filters.

So yeah, I'm fairly new to this digital photo world. Not too long ago I purchased a Canon G5. Now that I am pretty used to the settings and everything, I think I need to get lense filters, and I also am in need of a good wide angle lense.

So here's my questions:

#1 - What size of Filters do I need? (I think it's 52mm, right?) And what is a good, cheap UV filter. I also need that filter that enhances night shots. I can't remeber what it's called, but I need one of those, too.

#2 - Wideangle. I need one mostly becasue of the kind of photos I shoot. (BMX) My friend has one for his Nikon, and I like the affect that it gives, so I want to invest in one also (I think a .45x is best). So if someone would point me in the right direction there, I would really appreciate it.

Note: If you know a good place to buy all of the stuff from online, it would be nice to get a link or something.

Oh, I only have $200 (could go a little more, but not much more) that I can really sacrifice right now.

Sorry if thses questions are dumb, but hey.. we all gotta start somewhere, right?

I just bought these http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48525&item=3837505 023&rd=1 two weeks ago. So far I was mostly using 2x Tele Photo lens and UV filter. Wide angle lens is 0.45x with macro. I like the effect of wide angle, quality seems very good to me and you can use auto-focus to about 1cm from lens. The only weakness I could see so far is you can't use 52mm filter with wide angle attached to it becuse you get vignetting at full wide. If you zoom a little, vignetting disappears. Without filters there is no vignetting even at full wide.
All the filters you get in this package attach to adapter (52 mm), not to tele which needs 58mm filters or wide angle lens, which needs 67mm filters. So you attach filter to adapter and tele or wide angle lens to filter.
Maybe with 67mm filter attached to wide-angle there would be no vignetting.

Matjazr,

could you post a sample shot?

Most interesting would be an example with 100% crop from the edges of the picture ... because this normally is the place where the problems occur.
Normally, you do not see the problems in pictures resized for the web, but on the 100% crop or the printout.

Also, take a look at http://kazutoku.cside.com/G1andG2/report1_eng3.htm
It is a good overall information on adapters and conversion lenses for the G1 and G2. There is also a section for the G3 (which is identical with the G5, optically), but not all of it is in English.

Best regards,
Andy
