maybe a contrast or levels adjustment would make it pop more. Give it a shot.

#2 is the better image, but as the other poster said, the contrast / levels are just too flat, but I'm not sure how much there really is to work with there either. Would be difficult to get that one to pop in b&w. Might best be left as color.

OK...Hmm I wouldn't know where to start.
Try this in Photoshop:
1. Add a Levels adjustment (layer if you want) and move the left (black) and right (white) slider inwards to add more contrast.
2. Make a selection around the right side of the pic, feather it proportional to the size of the image. I did 20 on this size, try around 80 - 100 on the large size.
3. Add another levels adjustment just to the selected area.
4. Use the burn tool set to shadows, 3%, soft brush and go around the image darkening the shadows a bit.
5. Add some sharpening with the Unsharp Mask filter
A slight crop around the interest area.
