I was going through the manual of my 430ex and as I came to the Custom Function setting, I noticed that the C.Fn 05 enables or disables 'Modelling Flash'.

Now, I never read about this function before and don't know its usefulness. I don't even know how to use this feature:(

Would really appreciate if someone could throw some light on this:)

thanks!

Basically, it's a strobing effect used for assessing shadows around your subject.

Enable the modelling flash, stick it on your camera and then use the depth of field preview button (that little button next to the lens mount). you should see the flash strobe for as long as you hold the button down.

Be warned though repeated use will quickly drain your batts and potentially fry your strobe!

As the above posters have said, don't get overzealous! Only use it to knock over abusive drunkards

The manual says if you use it 10 times in a row to let it rest for 10min. to avoid damage. (p28)

So, i guess this function is of not much use for me currently.

Thanks guys for all that information!:)

If it's your only flash it won't do much for you. If you get a 580 or an ST-E2 it can really help with aiming when you have something like a snoot on the flash.
