View Full Version : Price of 5D after 5D mkII

With the price of the 5D around $2100-2200, it seems like a no brainer (assuming I don't need the features of the mkII and the higher cost). I'm talking bang for the buck here. Here's the deal. Do you think, after the announcement of the 5D mkII, the price of the 5D will drop, stay about the same or even go up as supplies dwindle?

If they release the "new" 5D at the current 5D's original price of $3200, then I don't think it will have an impact on the current models price.

Agreed, I see little change here. If you need the 5D now, why wait? It's a hekuva' camera at current pricing. What do you see the MkII doing that you would absolutely need to have at the higher price? Of course, that's speculation since we don't really know what it will have.

One thing for me would be the bigget LCD and a similar menu system like the more recent camera releases.

Bigger LCD wouldn't be bad for my 56 year old eyes. What would you change with the menu system - current one seems to work for me.

Probably don't really need the upgrades to be honest. BUT if the price of the MkII comes in around $2500 then I want the new one. Do you really think he new model will be as expensive as when the 5D broke?

I'm waiting for the new 5D mkII to be announced and released for a different reason - I'm going to pick up a nice cheap used 5D when everyone else (who admit they don't really NEED the upgrade) upgrades!

HA HA! Actually I'm getting real close to pulling the trigger on the 5D cuz Jan/Feb seems soooooo far away.

i'm in the same boat...
I'm probably gonna pick one up this week. I work at a photo store and our cost is 2200$ canadian - 350$ cash back.

So that drops it below $2k - that's really quite an excellent deal and a no-brainer for a top notch piece of gear. You can't go wrong ;).

i'd like an AF system more accurate than the current one (which is pretty good).
5 fps would be nice too.

I think it may drop just a little bit (at the most to $2000-1900) or stay the same. I've noticed that stores are STILL selling 20D's at their old price, even with the 30D's selling for the same or less...so I don't expect it to drop much at all.

I think the old model will disappear off the market once the stock has exhausted. They will probably lower the price in order to promote this (in fact they're already doing this...). I don't think there will be a 5D AND 5DII just like the EOS 350 AND 400 models.

I think we have seen the bottom of the 5Ds price at about $2000-$2200.

The price of the 5D will not drop, but used ones might.

Most likely. I don't believe Canon would allow their distributors to sell a model like that below $2k. There may be an isolated case or two, but these would be exceptions. And as usual, if it were SIGNIFICANTLY under $2K, I'd consider it suspect; way too many scams around. We seem them here every week.

I just ordered the 5D. Got a great deal on it and I don't think I'll NEED all the new features of the new one at a much higher cost. I don't think there will be a huge price drop on the current 5D. The price is already down, they have a have a have a sweet $500 rebate on a 5D if you buy a $400 Canon printer (which you could sell for $300+). Also there is the kit with the 24-105L for a little less than $700 more. Thats a steal for a $1050 lens. That gets your net cost pretty low. Buy now and start shooting.
I wait for the price to come down on the new 5D (unless an evil little voice in my head says otherwise )

Those are some sweet deals. I'd love to own a 5D!!
I bought my 30D in May for about $1050 where it sort of bottomed out for a bit until the 40D's were released. Since then the price has dropped to around $800. And it looks like there are plenty of used 30D's on the forums (people upgrading to 40D's) for great prices.
I'll take a guess :D 5D's might drop to $1900-2000 once the new 5d mkII's are out.

nobody without lenses will pay more fore a 5D than the Nikon 300D so about $ 1750 will be the price in 6 months

Well, I could be wrong - and I'm sure a lot of folks hope I will be - but I just see $1750 for a new body to be a bit too low. That would be 1/2 of the original price.

anyone think the 5D may go the route of the venerable 20D?

Well, they all go out of production if that's what you mean. It's the nature of the business. These are commodity items, just like PC's.

just trying to time it out, balencing parental confusion and conservatism ( I don't blame them for it though) and getting a new 5D

To a parent regarding big ticket items, timing is irrelevant. It's always a large cost, right now, or a little later .

More used volume -> lower used pricing.
Give it some time.

I dont think the price will change. I think they have already dropped the price as much as they are going to and now they are going to clear stock out. I think the 5D Mark II will come out at around $3000 and that will be high enough to make the 5D Mark I look low priced enough and keep them selling till stock is cleared.

After new version of 5D come out, the old ones probably drop down to below $1000...I hope :)

wishful thinking unfortunately, I'm thinking a 5D replacement will go for roughly the originial price of the first 5D. If that's the case then the MkI won't sell for much less.

I think we'll see a small drop in the used 5D (mkI) market, but considering it will be the most affordable full-frame model I think demand is going to keep the price up at least for a while. I am assuming here that the new model will be released at a similar price as the current model.

Not with the brutal competition we see today.
Hint:
D30 (first "affordable" DSLR) : $3,000 with the price creeping down to around 2000 before replacement (sounds familiar?)
D60 : $2,200
See a pattern?
And this is very well backed up by the price creep of the xxxD and xxD class making way. 500D - $700 40D - $1,300 7D - $2,100 Makes perfect marketing sense to me.
As for the 5D, it's already selling for 1600 second hand. I see it dropping down to 1300$ - same price point with the 40D.

I agree, I do see a downward pattern. But remember, part of marketting is that higher price = "perceived value" in addition to the actual value/features that are packed into any new product. The 5D occupied a unique position when it came out, and still does albeit to a slightly lesser degree due to time already in the marketplace and the advent of other models.
I still feel that a new model will not be cheap, and likely close in price range to the original 5D. Simply put, Canon will keep the price relatively high compared to other models, because they KNOW they can get a higher a price. They are counting on the early adopters, those to whom price is not the object, and those who value Canon quality. And they'll get their top dollar on the higher end models whenever they are introduced.
