Looking for experience with portable storage devices. Would rather not have to carry around my laptop on vacation.
Thanks

Portable storage devices fall into one of two categories:
(1) storage only using laptop-style hard disk
(2) image viewing and storage using laptop-style hard disk

The advantage of (1) is that it is cheaper and uses much less battery power.

The advantage of (2) is that it allows you to view your images. The problem is that it can't necessarily handle all file types, like different types of RAW.

And of course the third of Bob's 2 types is portable CD such as Apacer

I have used my Vosonic VP2030 X's Drive (http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?php_mode=spec&php_itemid=5) with 20GB HDD for about 2 years now. This simple device hasn't failed me once, and it has beed heavily used in a few occasions . The VP2030 is not manufactured anymore, instead there is the X's Drive II VP2060 (http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?php_mode=spec&php_itemid=11) with a small LCD status screen and USB2.0 interface (my VP2030 has only USB1.1).

Purchased an Apacer and have found it to be the "cats meow" - insures that I have a copy of pictures on permanet record - if you have ever lost a hard drive full of photo's you will appreciate a stack of cd's.

Consider a iPod.
In 20 and 40 gig versions you will have a lot to store.
Along the way you can hear your music collection too

How do you transfer the photo files to the IPOD? Is there a slot for a Compact flash card?

Thanks

I'm headed to Italy in a few weeks and I have been researching storage devices. I'm sitting here looking at my iPod and would love to hear if there is a way to download from my camera to the iPod without having to go through my laptop.

Ah, I just did a search for iPod and came up with the information to store the photos to the Pod.

Just search the forum for iPod.

If you need one device that can play music and also store your photos, then I guess you need something like an ipod.

For those of us who do not listen to music during our photography, then a normal portable storage device works well.

As for burning a CD, I prefer to burn the CD with images after they have been edited, and not before.

Belmondo records his to an Edison wax drum, I think.
