Jordan,

There are many answers to your question, the first being it's going to depend on a few factors, such as the size of the gym you want to light, do you want to light the entire court or just one end of the court, do you want to use monoblock lights (such as Alien Bees or White Lightnings) or just regular camera flash units triggered remotely? At minimum you will need 2 lights and a way to trigger those lights. I would recommend checking out this website: http://www.gophotography.net/tips/lighting.html. There are a lot of good tips in there on lighting small and larger gyms. I just noticed that in your signature it says you are 13 years old, so I am going to go out on a limb here and say your budget is limited ;-)

Well, going the cheapest route...here is a short list:
Vivitar 283 (or other manual flash) x 2 - $150
Triggering device (eBay version) - $40
Clamps for mounting the flashes (modified from home depot) - $5

So i guess you are looking around 200 bucks...probably wont get much cheaper then that

I looked at the Irwin 6" Fast Clamps at Lowes tonight - $19.95 for two with two free...$20 for 4. I think you might need one swivel bracket for each clamp so the flash can be positioned correctly. One like this...

Here's a spring clamp I found in the garage. It even had a hole in the handle that a 1/4 x 20 bolt fit right through. As you can see, it is plenty strong for the job.

Good luck. (I'm working on a similar setup)

Maybe this is dumb. But can a 580EXII be used as a strobe?

Yes, it can. You will need a triggering device and the correct cables and adapters to hook it up. Put the flash in "M" mode and have at it.
