Im no concert photog. I met these guys at a Vegas Nightclub, while i was taking their photo. My friend and i hung out and spoke with them for a bit, when they asked if we had tickets to their sold out show. We laughed a bit and said "No, its sold out" They stated its never sold out to friends of the band. They gave us 3 tickets including one photo pass for me. So i jumped at the chance to increase my portfolio. Here is what i came up with.... Please let me know what you think honestly.

that's one interesting story. You, my friend, are one lucky MF!
but one question, what's up with all the weird outlines around the mic, guitar, etc... in all the pictures?

Great shots all around - I like Fall Out Boy's music as well. What camera/lens combo was used on those shots? ISO setting? Thanks.

good photos, thanks for sharing. I like their music too but I can't help but feel old when I see how young their fanbase is!

You can't possibly be older than me and I go to see FOB and GCH every time they come over to the UK! My avatar was taken by my daughter at a FOB show in Glasgow last April.
Some really good pics there, Turbodude, thanks for posting them and the story.

I say: Why not? Looks like you are doing good so far ;)
How to get into the biz? No idea really. Networking helps. Shooting lots helps. Being lucky helps a lot ;)

It really is "Who you know, not what you know." If you know someone you can shoot all night with a point and shoot with the band using your pictures on their website with photocredit. Then if you're good and you get to meet more people through those people you can sell yourself and try to make a few bucks. But the quality of images required isn't a problem ... you can take crappy images and zap them in PS (convert to B&W and add lots of grain and/or contrast) to some artsy looking stuff although you do need interesting captures. I think the important things are: (1) Networking, meeting people, passing out cards, having a website; (2) Being reliable ... so many, many people in this area are like leaves on the wind and decide not to show at the last minute because they're buddy wants them to go to a movie or something ... I am 100% reliable (except when having heart surgery) and that really sets you apart from the crowd; (3) Turning out a good product where edginess and uniqueness count much more than technical excellence. I like technical excellence but that's not where it's really at!
I shot country star Terri Clark last night at a Toys for Tots benefit. Prior to the entertainment I was asked to shoot a Christmas picture of the Production Staff and then the Ushers. When I tried to get the people to line up a little better the boss (who is a great person to work for), who was in the picture, said, "Your pictures are always good ... only you think there are problems ... just take the damn picture!" And it's true. Only at the very top end where other experts are your customers is there any concern about quality ... and even then it will be secondary to a look that catches the eye and attention.

I've had several words directed at me, but as I don't pay attention to Pete's between song ramblings, I didn't realise it until my daughter told me about it after the shows (lol). Yes, I am a literally half-deaf old woman, hence my user name...

lol, when you're a crazy fangirl, its pretty different. But then again, I plan to live in NYC when I'm older [I'm already pretty close] So I'll see alot of famous people anyways ^_^ lol, I told me 2 friends [one's an amatuer photographer] about a photographer who got a photo pass and to talk to fall out boy, she was like "nooooooooooooo!! Why cant we be old enough for night clubs?!?"

I think #4 (Fall out boy) is a cut above the rest. I'm a little surprised about the lighting. I would have expected more for a big act like them.
I think I like the shots of Gym Class Heroes more though. They seem more dynamic. I think #5 from that set is my favorite.
Personally I think showing up is 75% of the battle when it comes to concert photography. I have no idea how to get into the business but it seems like you pushing your foot through the crack in the door with that bit of luck. More importantly though is you fallowed that luck up with a good performance.
Good job.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I think the reason the Gym class heroes pics are better is because i love the band. I dont particularly like FOB music. But after hanging out with them i will be buying their next cd in support. So subconsciously maybe not as inspired when shooting FOB. Because i saw the difference in pics too. And also i think i didnt use my 30 1.4 as much during FOB. Which didnt make me be creative. Whenever i use that lens the ideas that come through my head are crazing good.

Amazing photos. Especially the crowd shots. Just amazing.
EDIT...seeing as you were shooting in ISO1600, and you've given the thumbs-up for people to repost your photos, I took the opportunity to test a photoshop plugin I've just started using. Its results never cease to amaze me.
