I'm an aviation enthusiast who would like to get close-ups of airplanes from areas around and at the airport ; but I'm stuck with a powershot S50 which is only capable of 3x zoom (105mm? tops) which isn't much considering the distance I take these shots from. I've been thinking about acquiring a teleconverter of sorts. the adapter ($49) that works with my camera would have 37mm threads.

Here's two that I've found online so far, my only concern is if these are actually worth their value and if anyone knows the effect these have on image quality. I would appreciate any positive/negative feedback on these products if you have any experience and such with teleconverters for small digicams before.

I have the Tiffen 2X and the S45. The lens was given to me by my son after he upgraded to the DRebel (he wouldn't give me the Dreb   ). I use the 37 mm. adapter from CKC power.

Here are two pictures, taken in auto, from my back deck, to quickly give you some comparison shots. They have been resized at 800 X 600 to be uploaded to the net. If you want the full size images give me a pm and I can send them to your e-mail account.

I don't mind this lens but it does have some softness in the corners, seen by looking at fence rail, and does cause vignetting at 28mm. You have to zoom somewhat to get rid of that.

I do find the 2X lens a bit cumbersome to use, especially outdoors in daylight as it covers up the viewfinder and you have to use the lcd viewscreen. The viewscreen is very difficult to use in bright light.

The cars in the picture are approximately 100 ft away to give you an idea of distance and what you might gain.

hopefully this helps,

yeah I do see a little bit of blurriness on the edges, but asides from that it seems like an excellent deal, I'm game!

Wait a minute.....

Can I use a teleconverter on my S30?

Thanks,

yes, but you'd have to buy some special adapter thing that screws into your tripod mount hole. like $49 bux for that.

I have a 2x teleconverter made by Cokin, the filter people. Its called a magnefix and is magnetic. It comes with a thin, self adhesive, stainless steel washer which you stick to the front of a compact lens and the teleconverter holds on to it by magnetism.

Results are good. They do a wide angle too, but that is pretty useless.

They cost about £50 in the UK. and come in a couple of sizes.

I use mine on my Ixus 400
