not very good, you would really need a micro focusing rail.

Toby, what did you use with the MPE-65? That's pretty good detail considering, I wouldn't be complaining at all. Interesting looking fly.

30D with an extension tube (MJ please note) so that the 1.4x TC can work with the MPE.

Interesting pics and setup Toby. I see, come our winter, that I will be trying a lot of things I am picking up on the forum.

problem with the set up is the tripod is not accurate enough for this kind of work - ie the slightest adjustment and the subject is lost. A focusing rail on a heavy duty tripod would do the trick. As it is I found myself moving the subject to find focus and then having to hold it.

You can use the MPE-65 with Canon's teleconverters without using an extension tube between them. I've shot dragons at 7x using that combo.

For the magnification I don't think you did too bad. Hopefully that desk light wasn't a significant light source -at that mag you want the flash to freeze any vibration...

Good detail, I have tried with the EF 2X also and that works - not sure about the IQ however.

I can manage at 5:1 (just) handheld in field conditions but a geared focus slide makes it easier in studio.

Even using a really heavy tripod and a big Kirk B&S head framing adjustment is a pain, need a 2 way geared head for that.
