Day two of the local wrestling tournament, shot from the floor only instead of up above like Day 1 - very strange to be shooting indoors at ISO 160-320...got there kind of late (4 hours is kinda in my book) so didn't have time to mess around to much...and the results are....(EXIF embedded)...

Once again, great photos! You make me wanna wrestle again. I mentioned that in the Part 1 thread. Keep up the good work mate!

I was having flashbacks to tournaments I wrestled in while shooting, good times. Take some more learning, going to try and cover some home matches of the host team if I can...kind of ignored them a bit as I can see them any time. Shot 'em twice, but still not sure I got everyone.

how high was the ceiling that you were bouncing it off? wish you would have taken pictures of the ceiling and the setup ;)

I thought of that but then I never got a break to take one. Arrived at 2pm and shot straight to 8:40pm without stopping, well ok, when a kid got hurt I power walked over to the concession stand and grabbed a hotdog and pepsi, but that's beside the point, :D. Had to cover three gyms when I realized the teams I missed yesterday weren't coming to me and needed to be chased down...all three gyms had decent ceilings, 30-40 feet maybe? Not sure...

yeah not bad. I think next year I will get two alienbees 1600's. I know 800s work, but 1600's would be absolutely perfect for the high school gym I shoot.

were you shooting raw or jpeg? If raw you must have used up a LOT of cards lol

I got 1600's on the advice of "with 1600's you can power them down, but 800's you can't power up", or something like that. Spent the extra so far they seem to be well worth it, hopefully more so once I learn them better.

Large JPG - I never shoot RAW because for editorial use the images need to be up quick, so just used to it more so than RAW.

Yeah shooting jpeg in these HS gyms scares the living heck out of me. But I guess with strobes I could do it now.

Budget wise the 800's were in my price range, but with the 60 day return policy I might after xmas return and purchase the 1600's from them. I believe it is a total of 110.00 more so after xmas money is given to us that might be an option if the wife lets me have some :D lol

yea, $110 more isn't even a debate - 1600's ALL the way...just because most of this tournie I was shooting at 3/4th power which is obviously more than 800 so it worked well. I'm used to JPG, so stick to that :) for now...

yeah that is what I am thinking but it will have to wait till after xmas.

Good stuff Mike! I definitely like this set better than the first but both sets are excellent. You've captured good action in all but I prefer the exposures in the second set to the first. And exposurse in #s 4, 5, 6 and 8 of this set look perfect to me.

Hope you sell a ton of 'em so your bankroll is ready for ST ;)!

AthleticsPhotog - yup :)

Jerry - yea, I'm liking the brighter images right now, makes them stick out a bit more. I got an email already asking when one team will get online, doing it right now. Hopefully it will turn into a worthwhile weekend :)

My bank account could use something to put into it, ha.

Mike, getting down there definitely helped the shots. #8 here is particularly good and doesn't looked flashed at all to me. Glad to hear that your time (and money) looks well spent. As much as I don't think strobes are my cup of tea, seeing you and Matt get these results at 250ISO is making me drool. Our HS gym isn't horribly lit (not great either) and it's still 1600-3200 all the way just to get 1/500.

Nice shots my man! On another note, am I going to be seeing you this weekend or did the writer blow things up?

yeah that is the thing with me. I would rather have shots in the ISO range of 250 to 800 instead of 1600 to 3200 without a doubt. Strobe images are not for everyone like you said, but I don't mind the brightness factor as I have said.

The most important thing is if the parents like it and if the photographer likes it :)

you guys have definitely got me rethinking it, that's for sure. you are 100% correct in saying that it really comes down to whether you AND the parents are happy with them. I stress AND since I recently sold a few "pretty good" shots to a parent who actually sought me out at the last game to say how much they loved the shots. Made me feel good but when I looked at one of the images, I thought the color was just slightly oversaturated and that bummed me out. OCD has no place in photography!!:lol:

BTW, I shoot jpeg for sports like Mike does and really have not found it to ever be an issue (knock on wood!).

yeah I might give jpgs a shot the next game since I will be using strobes. But I love the safety net of raw lol

I use LightRoom so shooting raw is really just like shooting jpeg to be honest. I think that is why I don't mind shooting raw now a days.

good way to put it, safety net. I do love knowing that if I mess it up, I can always start from scratch so to speak. Maybe try the RAW+jpeg mode next time and only process the jpegs. If it works well for you, then just shoot all jpeg the time after that and see if you're still feelin it.

Mike - Congrats on the strobes, the shots look good and everything but I would MUCH RATHER see your baseball work. What did you decide for ST, FL or AZ?

Did you get the PW's figured out?

yeah when I shot arena football I used straight jpg at the time. But that was with great lights at the the arena. But in HS gyms I would never use jpg period. The lights cycle so often that the temp is different every other picture it seems. Usually I will use my expodisk to get the WB then adjust when needed.

Well don't quote me cuz I'm still learning, but if using the strobes right you should be able to overcome the natural light a bit - or I believe I read that on some tutorial. If that's the case then it's just a matter of getting the exposure right the first time instead of relying on RAW to fix it later, you just need to get there early and test test test. Keep testing during the games/matches and see how it all works. RAW does give you a bit of a safety net though so can see the argument for both.

This weekend for the game doesn't look good. I'll probably be home watching it instead.

PROCTORRRR!!!! My decision for ST isn't up to me, it's up to the client. If they send me to FL again I'm there in a heartbeat, if they don't then maybe to AZ on my own.

Chris,

You take wonderful pictures by the way! lol

Off topic but how do you join sportsshooters? Do you just join or does a member have to sponsor you?

I would love to join that one day, but if someone has to sponsor me how would you go about that?

Thanks AP.

I joined SS without a sponsor, they say 80% of the people who apply that way don't make it. In order to sponsor someone you have to be a senior member, which I am not and neither is Janes.

I would suggest you shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Watch your backgrounds, colors and crops. Since I first saw your work over at dslr, your stuff has really and I do mean REALLY improved. Keep up the good work.
