View Full Version : Medium-Tele and lower IS primes

I know canon is keen on lens based IS, and I know it works...
Currently they are slowly adding IS to most focal lengths zooms, and long telephotos.
Crop bodies now have IS on everything but ultrawide.. and FF are close behind.. (FF still lacking a standard 2.8 zoom IS)..
anyway, anyone have any conservative guess how far off it'll be before canon adds IS to it's shorter primes?
After seeing how useful the 17-55 IS is at 2.8 I can only dream of any f1.8 or lower IS prime under 150mm.
Surely a reality in future.. far off?
Cheers

far off?
Probably. From what I've heard on the subject, prime lens designs are very simple configurations of elements that have proven themselves well, and zoom lens designs are varied, complicated and have flexibility for adding an IS element group. Because of this, Canon is reluctant to change the designs of the smaller primes, so no IS for now.

I wish they would just ad IS to the cameras so the lens's would be cheaper.

Even though lens-based IS is far superior to in body IS, it would still be a nice plus, and could maybe be disabled when using an IS/OS lens.

I wish they would just update the 50 1.4 with real USM and redesign the 35 2.0... I would buy both in a heartbeat!!!

This might be the most random bump I've even seen -- not even on topic. But, I agree with you, some real USM would be nice in the 50mm f/1.4.

No waaay, I'm not gonna buy it for $1300 the way it is priced right now I might pull the trigger on it but anything over 1K is out of my budget.
Sorry for the "random" bump but I was talking about 'shorter' primes. I thought 50mm falls into 'shorter than medium tele' and 'under 150mm' prime category... and the point is that yes IS would be nice but it would be even nicer to have a good AF motor...
