Hi folks,

I am seriously considering a G9 to carry with me when my 40D is not appropriate. Would any forum member lucky enough to own both the G9 and the 40D care to comment on at what ISO setting sensor noise on the 40D roughly equates with G9 sensor noise at, say, ISO 100. Many thanks.

Bob.

I've got a 30D, but the high-ISO performance is essentially identical to the 40D.

My 30D at ISO 800 performs the same as the G9 at around 200. At ISO 100, the G9 is pretty clean.

Thanks Collin, that's great news. My guess is that I will be using the G9 mostly around ISO 100 with occasional forays to 200. If I anticipate anything more demanding then it will be the 40D.:cool:

I have both

80 = 200
100 = 200/400
200 = 400/800
400 = 800/1600

above this is for fun

*note: using a 580ex (or any TTL) flash is great with the G9.

I'm actually in process of doing a test BBob at 100, 200, 400, 800 ISO G9/40D ... should be posted in next hour or so ;-)

You will also typically get better noise performance if you shoot in RAW, expose to the right and then post process using Noise Ninja or other noise tool. It is worse in the camera using jpg.

Thanks folks. That was just the sort of feedback I wanted and yes, RAW is definitely where I want to be with this camera as with my 40D! The only decision now is when to buy. Prices probably won't be that seasonal but I will wait a few weeks and hopefully get a good price just into the New Year. :cool:

Thanks again.

Bob,
Have you checked www.camerapricebuster.co.uk for best price, I tried Kerso but there was only £10 in it, beat off with a UK warranty for the price.

Hi andydajo,

Yes, the Camera Price Buster G9 page (http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Canon_PowerShot_G9_pc.html) is the one I'm keeping an eye on. I checked the EBay prices and I would rather spend the extra few pounds and know I wasn't picking up a grey import. Thanks for the heads up, though. :cool:
