Im looking for a good all around camera for my wife. Im sure she is wanting one that she can stick in her purse and easy to get to but she want say. I was looking at the point and shoot cameras G9 A650 S5 etc. After doing some reading im not too sure if a XTI would not be the better choice. What mostly she will be shooting kids, indoor-outdoor, not too sure about nature shots. She has a 35mm and has never shot with a digital camera but is a very smart women and can pick up easly. Also like the option of larger prints so I guess the pixels would go up. Most of all image quality and zoom. I have probly confused ya'll but I thank you for all suggestions I will be open

Thanks
Kevin

She has a 35mm SLR? Or a P&S?

IF it's her first digital camera I'd try and keep it simple and get something that is not too confusing and easy to learn. And I think you really need to think about the size.. my wife sometimes takes my little S200 whereas a larger camera would be inconvienient. I think that sometime we forget that digital P&S can take decent pictures nowadays compared to film P&S, and with smaller size you feel like dragging it around with you more and taking more pictures. :)

a 350D is small but with a lens it isn't small enough for a 'purse'. Panasonic TZ3 is nice and so is the G9. Both small and the first more a point and shoot while the G9 more for those with good understanding, or prepared to learn.

IHMO, it really depends on the type of person she is. If she isn't already excited about the added controls and quality of the SLR (from you talking about it), it's unlikely she'll use it. If she says honey I trust you, then she doesn't want an SLR.
Is she be the kind of person who puts it in the full Auto mode and snaps away?
Is she the kind of person who says...I wished I had more control over the camera or more versility?
Is this SLR really for you ;)

What are the main features the DSLR have over the G9. For picture image quality the G9 will probly be all I need

with a dslr you can change lenses (and have more of an option mm wise...from 14-600mm if you want) and often faster fps

the downside is that it costs quite a bit more to get the basics, with a dslr, than are built into a G9. However, with good lenses the IQ above 400 iso is much better on a dslr.

The G9 is an excellent P&S...honestly, I've never even put a P&S in the "excellent" category before. There've been some very good ones (I include the S series in this) but there's always been severe shutter lag. In the G9 there is shutter lag but it's minimal...the best I've yet seen in a P&S. You have all the manual control options that you'd have in a dslr (so she could learn everything with it and then when she's ready, advance to the dslr if she wanted to). The dslr handles noise better. The G9 can be very noisy above 400 iso but if you keep it below the iq is very nice indeed.

The dslr is bulky and the P&S is easy to have in a purse/pocket to use at anytime. The G9's range is minimal, I think it's from 24-200mm (or thereabouts) so it's not super wide and not a long telephoto. However, I would recommend it above every other P&S currently on the market (I've owned several in the last few years, including a newer panasonic and olympus...there's just no comparison in IQ, with the G9 being above it's competitors by far).

Just got back from the store and the wife loved the 400D and never even looked at the P&S who would have thought it

Is this the best decision or look at the Nikon 80D ETC?

The G9 can be seen in two different ways. The first one, is great for DSLR people who need something smaller and lighter keeping lots of control. The other one, is to see the G9 as the best pre-DSLR Training Simulator (like the ones for Jet Fighters). Maybe a S5 is not small enough for your wife's requirements.

Wow, she must have a huge purse if she's considering the 400D or 80D. My wife would never go for something that big.

well you are asking the wrong group about canon v/s nikon. ;)

i was going to suggest the g9 as well, but if she wants a dslr, then the 400D is a fine starting place. remember, it is glass that lasts. most lenses that you get for the 400D will work when she decideds that she wants the 40D, then the 5D, then cleans you out with the 1D :)

the only reason i can think of in this situation to not get a canon dslr, is if you already have glass for a different manufacturer.

Fantastic camera. She'll love it. Did she get the kit or just the body? Let the spending begin

Exactly. Buying a SLR body is the ignition key to a huge money draining. First the lenses, then maybe a flash, Ohhh! More lenses!, what about this carbon fiber tripod??? Oh, yes, remote trigger is a must FOR MY PHOTOGRAPHY, Macro lens is coming, and so on... ENJOY, Visa, MC and Amex people will!
