View Full Version : 2007 Grizedale Forest Stages - A very challenging day!!

What a day! Definately some of, if not THE most challenging conditions I've ever photographed in. Next to no light, driving rain and then snow making flash photography a waste of time, and so cold that I had to look at where my fingers were as I couldn't feel any of the buttons on the camera!

Brilliant fun though!!

Anyway, on to some pictures from the event....

#1 Rally winner David Bogie. At this time, we only had zero light to deal with.

#2 Conditions soon started to get worse.....
http://www.srh-motorsport-photography.com/Galleries/forum/grizedale07/NX4L0247.jpg

#3 Although it didn't stop everyone from trying hard, even when the rain started to turn to sleet and then snow..
http://www.srh-motorsport-photography.com/Galleries/forum/grizedale07/NX4L0267.jpg

#4 A little bit of ditch hooking!
http://www.srh-motorsport-photography.com/Galleries/forum/grizedale07/NX4L0323.jpg

#5 Prettiest car of the day IMHO.
http://www.srh-motorsport-photography.com/Galleries/forum/grizedale07/NX4L0387.jpg

#6 And then things got really unpleasant!
http://www.srh-motorsport-photography.com/Galleries/forum/grizedale07/NX4L0448.jpg

#7 And then even worse!
http://www.srh-motorsport-photography.com/Galleries/forum/grizedale07/NX4L0464.jpg

All of the shots were taken with a 1D mk II, a Sigma 120-300 f2.8, very cold hands and at either ISO1250 or ISO1600. Shutter speed was no higher than 1/200s and aperature actually got up to f3.5 at one point!!

There's a full gallery to look at via the following link for those that want to:-

As usual, any comments or feedback would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Simon.

Very nice selection Simon - sounds like good fun  Nothing like not being able to feel you're fingers when trying to take some shots :p

Nice action with the "puddle" on the inside of the corner ;) Also like the colours, nice and vibrant. The last shot is almost like a painting - cracking shot.

Really like the last two Simon, really shows the poor conditions. I thought it was bad at the Wales GB but yesterday looks even worse

some serious ditch hooking going on, surprised someone didn't come a cropper going so deep into the ditch.

Nice shots in filthy conditions.

hahaha I just watched the latest Top Gear and they were poking fun at that car ... I was thinking that I wanted to rally race one (as it might be remotely affordable versus a brand new WRX or EVO) :p

great shots all around! I can't believe how crappy the weather conditions were for this rally!

Nicely done Simon,

How did you protect your camera gear from the elements?

Thanks Darren. It certainly wasn't too pleasant at the time, but I'm pleased I stuck with it, as I've got some photographs that are a little different from the norm.

Cheers,

Simon.

Thanks Austin :D.

How did I protect my camera gear? The lens and body were covered with a Kata rain cover. I then had a large chamois draped over the top of that, as I was concerned that the driving rain would come through the seams of the part of the cover over the lens. After that, I had a large umbrella up, the handle of which was stuffed down my jacket so I could shoot from underneath it without having to hold onto it.

The combination worked well, but I still had to dry off a little moisture from my gear when I got back to the car. Driving rain and snow has a habit of getting everywhere!

Cheers,

Simon.

Thanks Darren. The only time I've been wetter was on the Border Counties rally 2 or 3 years ago - IanH might remember that one. Wasn't as cold that day though.

At least you got some action. We only ventured out to SS6 and after a delayed start there was a long delay after a couple of cars so from then on it was raining hard and going dark. My lens just couldn't cope even at ISO 1600.
Two very cold and miserble people retired to the car and then the log fire at the pub in Lindale to thaw out.

A few late pix of Grizedale, really enjoyed going to the Lakes.
Glad it turned to snow, makes it more exciting & interesting for the drivers, spectators & photographers.
I actually had gloves on but still couldn't feel my fingers at the end of the rally, stayed till end of stage 5 Grizedale North................Baltic!!!!!!!

Nice set of pictures, i like #6 and 7# most. A bit different then the usual rally shots, and really shows how bad the weather was.
