I'm going on a trip to Ecuador and Galapagos, and I was wondering if you think a monopod would be more useful than a tripod. Currently I own a manfrotto 190xb tripod with 486RC2 ballhead, however I just feel this would take to long to set up each time I would want to use it. If I did get a monopod I could just take the ball head off my tripod and use it on my monopod.

I would recommend a monopod because simply you'll be very mobile and a tripod simply can't do it. But if you are staying in one place for a extended period of time, then use a tripod.

for what type of photography are you planning to use a tripod/monopod?
that would be a main factor choosing one of them.

I agree. You could opt for one of those monopods with the little legs at the bottom to help stability, though I would not trust it completely.

You could always use the tripod as a monopod, just use one leg...but not the other way around...tripod more useful, monopod less weight and also depends what you want to take photo's of
